Sony A6000 - New or Used? First time camera buyer.

Hi Guys,

I'm after a camera, though not sure if I should buy it from the store or used? Instores it's…
$700 for the body,
$200 for the SELP1650 general use
$350 for the SEL50F18B food
= 1,250
- 150 cash back
= 1,100 with 1 yr warranty

But there's so many cheaper used ones online, but then there's scams and all that. The ones I'm looking at on gumtree and aren't near me. I'd only feel safe using paypal. Read some guides which say you should meet up and try before you buy. What are your thought? These are the one I'm looking at:

Body + manual lens (kit?) $500
Body + 16-50mm lens $600
Body + twin lens kit (16-50 & 55-210) $800
Body + two lenses. E 50mm f/1.8 OSS + 16-50mm lens $850

Thanks!

  • I purchased this camera about a year ago and have been very happy. Got from JB and they did budge on price a fair bit (sorry can't remember exactly what I paid, think it was $1100 for the body, 1650 lens, 50mm lens, plus got $150 gift card by redemption).
I also got the 50mm SEL50F18B lens. Absolutely brilliant lens, probably takes the best photo's I have ever taken, BUT it is really only good for single person portraits.
I recently purchased the Sigma 30mm ART series prime lens for about $200 and this is a far better general purpose (good quality) lens and is quickly becoming the lens that I use the majority of the time.

FWIW, personally I would buy new. There doesn't appear to be a massive cost saving for going used.

  • I would recommend buy a new one unless you are quite experienced in camera to find out if there is dust on the sensor or damage to the lens.
Also I would never buy used without first inspecting the camera/lens in person. There are some FB groups that trade used gear but they are definitely not very cheap. The only reason I would go used is because I cannot afford the new.

  • Thanks guys, I'll buy a new one. Been doing a lot of research and everyone recommends different cameras/lens so confused.

    • This was one of the best sources I found when I was looking for lenses. I really like that they have a top pick and also a budget pick.
It all depends on what you want to do with it. I'm just an average point and shoot user of this camera for general photography and have found myself mainly using the Sigma 30mm lens and I reckon I will probably want a zoom lens at some stage for taking shots from a distance.

      • I'm struggling with low lighting, people getting in the way (camera shifts focus) and holding still.
