I have shopped with Groupon before. I personally couldn't care less if they transfer my name and address etc across. I enter a lot of competitions where I give out the exact same information and some of these look much dodgier than Groupon

They're doing it for your own good, don't you believe them?

shifting to ireland for tax purposes

  • Yep, absolutely a tax dodge. Ireland not only has a VERY low corporate tax rate, but also offers international companies who will shift operations to Ireland - up to a 10 year tax holiday!

Meanwhile, the puny corporate tax breaks proposed by the Liberals here have not made it thru the Senate because they are being blocked by Labour and the Greens who, if they had their way, would probably want to increase corporate taxation and drive away even more business.

      drive away even more business

It's pretty easy to legislate that if you operate here you pay taxes here. But the ruling classes do not do this despite claiming to be very concerned about tax evasion.

If businesses don't want to pay it fine, f-off and let another business earn profits. It won't happen because Australia is a large, well run economy that is profitable to operate in.

      • It's pretty easy to legislate that if you operate here you pay taxes here.

With the global online service based economy it absolutely isn't easy to legislate.

Define "operate". What happens if I (as a customer) choose to purchase a service from a Mexican company via my Visa card (say I purchase a piece of digital software). I as the customer effectively "went to Mexico" and made the purchase. So how do you tax them?

As it stands all incentives for online service based companies are to operate from the country that offers them the lowest tax. There is literally zero way currently to legislate against this. Legislation is bound by geography, business isn't.

  • 100% tax dodge/minimisation and nothing else.

Since they're still trading in Australia they still need to hold your information to a standard that meets Australian privacy laws and the Australian Privacy Principles. So in regards to personal data security it doesn't mean much, they just have a legal obligation to disclose this move.

If you trusted them with your info to date, there's no reason why this should change your mind. Likewise if you didn't trust them with your data to date, there's no reason why this should change your mind.
