Telstra plan that gives recharge credit?

Hi,

I recall a few on Ozbargain stating a Telstra plan that gives recharge credit that can be Used for Google play purchase. I called up Telstra And they seem to be clueless.

Could someone help me out? Is it still available?

Cheers.

It's not available for Prepaid, not sure about contract.

  • Pretty sure that is now grandfathered. I.e You can no longer sign up for plans that duo that

  • technically Telstra long life $30 plan…

It just converts the $30 you have to recharge to google play.

Anyone with excess $30 plan sims that they got for cheap should be doing that,

Grandfathered plan Freedom plus gives you as much credit for Google play as you spend on recharging ($40 gives $40 recharge credit + 3GB data + unlimited domestic calls + $350 international calls)

But yeah, you can't get it anymore.

Not sure about new offers they have.

    • Does this still work with the old data pass plan?

A lot of confusion above. It is still available with a twist, you buy a $30 starter pack and activate on Prepaid Plus, then on the 28th day switch plans to simplicity or long life and then spend the $30 recharge credit in Google Play. Rinse & repeat with $2 sims in between. Read through the Telstra wiki on OzBargain or at Whirlpool - they contain all the information but it is a lot of reading.

It's only a matter of time before Telstra close this final loophole, 1-2 months I would say. So it's probably not worth the learning now to save a few bucks.

      Thanks for the info :)

Oh cheers was not aware of that!

    • That's great. Sorry for the noob question; how to use the Telstra credit in Google Play?

      • -1

When you buy something Google play will ask you how you want to pay (usually defaulting to credit card). Choose "payment methods" and then "bill my Telstra account".

That's it. The charge will come off your$30 recharge credit balance

        • Awesome!!
          Cheers

    • Does it have to be on the 28th day?

If I do it earlier, does that mean I have to recharge earlier?

      • -1

Can be done earlier, but once you switch plans away from Prepaid Plus then you will lose unlimited talk and text.

After switching to simplicity or long life plan then all calls, texts and data eat into the $30 recharge credit.

Best to use up all 28 days that the Prepaid Plus plan allows you, then sirens the $30 asap thereafter

        • If i switch to long life plan, does the recharge credit last the entire long life plan? or does it expire in 30 days? Reason I am asking is because I am moving provider and I want to use up all my recharge credit and have more time to spend it. thx

        • @ozbaragan: to be honest I'm not sure. I would assume recharge credit is only 28 days and cannot be linked to long life plan expiry. However could be wrong.

    • Rinse & repeat with $2 sims in between.

What do you mean by this?

Couldn't I just recharge $30 on Prepaid plus, wait til the last day, switch to Simplicity, buy apps, then switch back to Prepaid plus(on the same day?) all without changing the sim in the phone?

Well you could but then on the 29th day you would have a sim with no calls, texts or data on the Prepaid Plus option.

You could recharge $30 (for example from your credit card) but then you don't get the $30 recharge credit (aka Google Play credit) from recharges - you only get it from starter packs. And you can't recharge a starter pack with another starter pack.

So, assuming you have purchased multiple $30 starter packs and want to extract the $30 recharge credit from each pack then on the 29th day you you will need to port out to another provider (Optus/Vodafone $2 sims work well for this) and then port back into another Telstra $30 starter packs

        • but then you don't get the $30 recharge credit (aka Google Play credit) from recharges.

I didn't know this. Would the following steps be the correct procedure?

          1. Activate a new $30 sim on Prepaid Plus
          2. On the 28th day, switch to Simplicity, and spend $30 on the Google Play store.
          3. After the Google Play credit is spent, port out to another provider, then port back to Telstra on a new $30 prepaid sim.

          @ozhunter: Spot on.

Bear in mind Telstra may, at some point in time, remove the Google Play billing from Simplicity & Long Life plans (they have already removed it from Data Pass). So I wouldn't be stocking up on a large quantity of Telstra $30 starter packs given this uncertainty

  • Does anyone know what happens if you only have $20 credit on your sim, but you want to make a $30 purchase.

Does it let you pay $20 of it with the telstra credit, then allow you to pay the balance with a Google Play gift card?

Can't split payments in Google play, unfortunately
