What Are The Chances of Domestic Qantas Award Flight near Christmas Time

Hello,

Anyone know if Qantas actually releases any award flights close to Christmas? For example Depart 21st Dec, return 27th Dec.

I'm planning next year's Christmas travel, 1 year in advance. I have so far discovered that in general, award flights become available 353 days in advance. Today is the 21st Dec and today I am only able to book for the 9th Dec. Clearly I would need to book to first leg separately to the second leg, which exposes me to a risk of a not knowing whether i'll actually get a return ticket on the date I want.

I am considering getting a membership for expertflyer.com, just to maximise my chances, but it would be a waste if in fact there were no award seats made available at that time of year in the first place.

This is probably a question for the Australia Frequent Flyer forum, but i'm not a member on that site.

Cheers!

  • I have flown Qantas award flights over Xmas/New Year. I booked well in advance.
For international destinations, I ended up with a mix of Qantas and partner airlines.
I noticed some partner airline seats became available later than Qantas seats.
I think your chances of getting award seats are dependent on the popularity of your destination.

  • also your QFF status…. if you are platinum, gold etc…. you have better availability than if not

  • Thank you:)
    The route is PER-MEL.
I am a pleb with no status :( so sloppy seconds for me!
At least it seems there's a chance

    • You will have 0 problems with this route mate. Stress less :)

  • You will probably be ok. At least you are not looking for something ridiculous like 4 business class seats to LA.

  • Ok so here's my experience:

The QFF awards seats were released 353 days in advance, as expected.
The date in question was searchable by about 5am, but the award flight was not able to be selected until about 9am (that's WA time).
The only award flights released were 2 business class seats per flight. (There were no economy seats, I assume due to being peak season.)

    Cheers!

PS: I did not get the expert flyer membership.
