Will the Gigabyte nVidia GeForce GT 710 1GB DDR3 Graphics Card be enough for 1080p mkv watching?

I have recently had a bad power supply ruin 2 of my older video cards. 1 of them was the nvidia 9800GT 512mb, which I have been quite impressed with considering its age. I have picked out a video card(Gigabyte nVidia GeForce GT 710) and power supply(Thermaltake TR2 S 550W 80PLUS) but I want to make sure that the gt710 will be able to play mkv's and hd streaming without any stuttering. Anyone have any experience with this card? The nvidia 9800Gt was able to achieve this admirably. The reason I choose the gt710 is because its dirt cheap and it has pureview HD decoders. I don't want to upgrade my pc and I want to pay as little as possible. I can get the vid card and psu for around $100 from umart.

I have a 775 mother board, dual core cpu, 3gb of ram and a 240gb ssd.

  • I've had a bad power supply in the past. The graphics cards are probably fine, don't throw them out. If you have already, the gt710 may work with 1080p but I doubt it'll work with 1080p 10bit/HEVC. I gotta tell ya man, it looks beautiful if you have a 10bit monitor!

    • Wow even though the video card output is 8bit? That's amazing that you see all that extra quality when it's not there!

      • "but I doubt it'll work with 1080p 10bit/HEVC"

        • I'm not too worried about that. I think by the time that becomes mainstream( if it ever does) I will have a decent poota.

    • I will hold on to them… :)

      • I threw out an r9 270 and an old 6850 before i realised :(

  • yes

  • +1

Most processors come with built in graphics these days that would be able to do 1080 movie watching just fine. Check if you really need one first.

    • The problem is I have an older mainboard and I would have to upgrade that aswell as the cpu. I just need something to keep me going until I upgrade properly in around 2 yrs. I want to save alot of money next year so this has been a pain in the ass for me.

      • he's correct. integrated graphics will be plenty fine and have been fine for fhd video many years already.
if you still don't think so, you can always buy a graphics card later, a luxury from building a desktop system.

        • But I can't get this for $100 or under,(including psu)correct? all I need is no stutter of 1080p mkv/streaming and I'm happy. When I upgrade eventually, I won't be pulling any punches.

        • can i achieve this on a 775 motherboard? I could get a quadcore for like $50 dollars

        • @FeRGan:
          Probably not.
Also I think back then, the integrated graphics card was not on the CPU die but on the motherboard
You'll need to upgrade your mobo and cpu. or just get the cheapo GPU card instead
