Switching Health Funds To Reduce Waiting Period

I called my provider HIF and learned that my cover doesn't include psychologist consultation (before you start joking about it, it was a straightforward excessive dream problem), and if I buy extra-cover, it takes 12 months to be effective. I wonder if switching health insurance provider may speed it up?

If changing funds, you do not have to serve waiting periods if your cover is equivalent. So you could shop around for another policy that looks equivalent, but includes phycological consultation and see if you can transfer and have the waiting period waived.

That's the only way I know of.

  • Phycology is the scientific study of algae?

    • Thanks, corrected:)

  • The answer is, No.

Your new health fund may waive the waiting period if you have served out the waiting period at your previous health fund.
However, as you have not served out the waiting period at ANY health fund, it is difficult to get it waived.

There is 1 exception: Try finding a health fund that is currently having one of those "we will waive your waiting period" promotion at the moment.

    • Hi. I'm looking to waive the waiting period of extra covers, not of health fund. I have had this health fund for 2 years. Maybe I should say "additional" instead of "extra" to be really clear.

      • Your new health fund may waive the waiting period "for psychologist consultation" if you have served out the waiting period "for psychologist consultation" at your previous health fund.

You'll probably find that no fund will waive 12 month waiting periods. They often do for 2 or 6 month.

  • As above, waiving 6mth is doable with good reason but waiving 12mth is rare. You might as well try, but don't hold your breath.

  • It turns out that starting 2016 there is this Better Access to Mental Health Care program which covers roughly 40% of such service for all permanent residents, requiring referral. Too bad that I didn't know this before I visit the psychiatrist and bore it for the first time.
