PS4 Slim 500GB - Slow internet speeds?

My internet seems to run very slowly and inconsistently on my new PS4 Slim. When I run a connection test sometimes I will get speed of 500kbps, and seconds later it can be 2.5mbps, then seconds later 15mbps. I have cable broadband so my normal internet is very fast.

Downloads take a very long time and sometimes stop completely. The PlayStation store and other features in the menu sometimes don't load at all.

I also seem to have an issue where Netflix and YouTube sometimes won't open normally by pressing X. I just get stuck on a please wait screen. If I press options then start application however they will load every time. The streaming quality also goes up and down whilst watching videos, and can be slow to load. This is definitely not a problem with my internet.

Has anyone else had trouble with connection speeds on PS4? I have heard of people having trouble with their speeds, but surely not to the point where Netflix and YouTube won't open normally by pressing X.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Is your PS4 connected via ethernet or wifi when these issues occur?

    • Wifi. Think I was getting about 75% signal strength. It says NAT type 2 as well.

  • Have you checked the DNS settings on your PS4?

I've got a XB1 S and my downloads was quite up and down. After I manually typed in the ISP's DNS, it becomes quite fast.

  • Try connecting to 5GHz network if you havent.

  • -1
  • Thanks for the suggestions everybody I will try them all out.

So is this a common problem with PlayStation, has anybody else experienced similar issues?

I have recently read that the PS4 can cap your speed, and it doesn't matter how quick your internet is. If the PS4 servers are busy then it will be slow for you.

I've got no idea why Netflix and YouTube won't open sometimes by pressing the X button. Could this be a internet or just general software issue?

My Xbox One download speed has always been really quick.

    • I've had the problem with YouTube not starting. It says it can't contact YouTube. But that's just a one off and my PS4 is just over a week old. After 1-2 minutes, it was OK again. Not sure what happened there because I was able to access YouTube using other devices when it happened.

Haven't experienced slow internet speeds so far. Then again, I don't play online much to notice it.

      • Mine sounds like a different issue honestly.

When I hover over the app and click options on the controller, then start application, it ALWAYS works.

If I go into my library then click X on the app, it doesn't always take me to the screen that says start application. It gets stuck on the please wait…. screen where the PlayStation symbols spin around.

So it's not an actual YouTube or Netflix issue. Maybe it's more of a software problem?

    • Well I can say that both my original and Slim PS4's, with standard settings, OG on 2.5GHz and Slim on 5GHz wifi, the 'download speed' in the test was always much lower than I could ever get via a computer/phone and speedtest.net.

Youtube and apps not opening at all sounds like some SEVERE packet loss actually. I'd be running some network diagnostics via a computer.

      • YouTube opens every time when I hover over it and select options on the controller, then start application.

It's only when I press X to open it, sometimes it doesn't take me through to the start application screen.

Is it normal for the PS4 to take a few seconds to load internet based content on the main screen? For example under the what's new tab, it can sometimes take a few seconds to load all the images and info underneath. Those Playstation symbols spin for a few seconds before it loads.

        • Yes that's normal, it's loading a decent amount of pics and only shows when fully loaded.

  • Sounds like a WiFi problem initially - that's the thing to look at first. It could be congestion on your local cable network too but I can't see that causing Netflix / YouTube to fail completely.

Which cable network are you on? I'd expect Bigpond/Foxtel to be reliable. Optus has question marks all over their network now.

The quickest thing to try might be changing the WiFi channel at the router. WiFi (2.4Ghz) runs in small frequency bands called channels, they're generally numbered 1-13. Because of the way some channels share frequencies the best channels to use are 1, 6 or 11. Basically - log into your router and check out what the WiFi channel is set to. Try changing it to 1,6, 11 or even Auto (if available) and see if that improves things.

Note that when you change WiFi channels all your devices about the home will lose their WiFi connection and will have to re-establish it. 99% of devices do that automatically.

Next thing - 5Ghz WiFi is faster than 2.4Ghz but it depends on distance and obstruction. 2.4Ghz penetrates further through floors and walls so it's generally the safest bet. If you've got a router capable of 5Ghz and the 5Ghz signal is strong at the PS4 then it's something to try.

Overall - a wired connection beats WiFi. Are you able to run a Ethernet cable neatly from your router to the PS4? If not perhaps some "Ethernet over Power" devices will improve things for you. They work as a pair of devices - one near your router and one near your PS4. They just plug into a power point (or power board) and you connect Ethernet to them. They then emulate an ethernet connection over the power cables in your walls. They're safe, secure and won't bother anything else in your house. They're not as fast as direct Ethernet cable but they are fast and reliable.

The only catch with Ethernet over Power is they need to run on the same power circuit or power phase. For many homes that won't be an issue, but I can't say if that includes your place.

  • Thanks I will try all of those.

Sorry I probably should have explained the YouTube and Netflix issue more clearly.

They ALWAYS open when I press options on the controller, then start application. Although with lesser quality and speed than my Xbox One, they both work.

The problem is getting to the start application screen by pressing X. Sometimes it just sits on the PlayStation symbol loading please wait screen.

This might happen with all apps, not just Netflix and YouTube.

I really have no idea what could be causing this, an internet issue surely wouldn't prevent you from getting to the start application screen after you press X would it?

  • Set a fixed ip address for your PS4

    Use Google DNS - 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4

    Set Manual MTU of 1473

    Set NO proxy.

    Turn your Christmas lights off.

  • Ethernet cable seems to have fixed problem. Getting a pretty consistent 30-35mbps now which is my top speed.

So does the PS4 not have great wifi or wifi that needs tweaking when you set it up?

Downloads from PSN store are still a bit slow, my max download speed seems to be 3MB per second. From what I understand it is normal for the store to cap your download speed and speeds aren't that great for anybody? My download started to go slow and was going to take 10+ hours for 6GB. I checked and my speed was 35mbps on the PS4. When I started playing a game it seemed to finish pretty quickly which was weird.

Also how does everyone open their Netflix and YouTube apps? I've been going through the library, but that doesn't seem to be a direct link to opening the app. This is where it doesn't load sometimes and I get the PlayStation please wait symbols. If I do get through I have to click start application again. If I go through the tv and video tile it opens every time without any issues. Surely this is still not normal though, it should open all the time through my library as well right?

EDIT: Actually it seems most apps/ games give me the please wait screen only when I open them in the library. Selecting them in the library doesn't automatically open the game or app, which is maybe why it takes time to load the start application page? Does anyone else have this problem?

    • Go into safe mode and re-do the database. It's harmless and actually recommended to do from time to time. It may resolve some issues.

  • I read that downloads are faster when the PS4 is in rest mode. Maybe the PS4 alots only a certain amount of available bandwidth to the dowbload so you can continue to use the PS4 if you want to play a game or stream.

Consider yourself lucky that wifi speed was your only problem. My PS4 is a month old and I had to get it replaced with a new one. I kept getting error code CE-834787-0, game crashes after 5 minutes, every time. Spent a day and a half initializing it three times, full software install twice and all the game updates.

  • My internet is definitely faster, but I still seem to have small annoying issues.

    1. Whenever I watch a live video on YouTube, it streams at a very low quality. This is not an issue on my Xbox One, yet my Xbox One is connected through wifi. Normal YouTube videos seem fine, but YouTube live the video quality on the PS4 is terrible. My internet on PS4 is 35mbps, so there is no reason for this to be happening.

While watching a live YouTube video, connection speed on Xbox is 10076kbps, and my PS4 drops to 332kbps………

    1. When I start my PS4, I now get a message saying LAN cable not connected. However the internet is connected and always works, so I'm not sure why I get this message.

    2. I'm still finding that I get the please wait Playstation loading symbols quite often. When trying to access PS+, or even my account sometimes it just won't load. I have to try multiple times and it can take a good minute or two.

It's been a bit frustrating so far, and I'm definitely finding my Xbox One to be a lot quicker to load applications and other basic functions. Even though my speed is 35mbps through a wired connection on PS4, the Xbox One just seems so much faster and more reliable at everything even through wifi.

Has anybody ever experienced any of this?

  • I've had this issue with both the PS3 and PS4. The only fix I've found is to connect the ethernet straight to the console. I have no explanation except that the wifi download speed in the consoles may be artificially limited.

  • In my experience with the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, the download speed seems to slow down when I start to stream other contents or play a game requiring network access at the same time. It is like some sort of Quality of Service (QoS) taking over. Unfortunately it doesn't restore to the highest speed when I stop using the console. Not even putting it in rest mode. I have to literally pause the download and then restart. Putting it into rest mode after that is ok. Its the same for me on Wi-Fi or Ethernet. My router does have QoS setup and it correctly reduces and increases the download speed the PS4 can utilise in accordance to overall usage within the household. I have even tested without QoS on the router. Same thing.
