Morning Room Automation

Hi all,

I was after a setup guide on a morning automation on my bedroom setup.

I'd like my light/s to turn on every morning as my alarm goes off, plus I'd like my tv to turn on, and play a youtube morning playlist of music to help me spring out of bed.

For context:
- I have a large TV in my room connected to a Soundbar
- It isn't a smart TV but I have a Chromecast 2

I would need a recommendation on a Smart Bulb of some sort - I have good lighting in my room therefore I only want 1 smart bulb…which means I need a smart bulb that doesn't require a hub. Pretty much that's all I need, because I imagine I can automate everything through IFTTT (If this then That).

Because I only need a bulb… I hope I can get it for less than $15 (considering boxing days etc.)

Help greatly apprecaited. Thanks all - Merry xmas and happy new year!

  • I don't do this, because I need to get up on time and there is too much that could go wrong in a more complex setup, but I would totally go for a gradual dimming to on over several minutes if I was.
Similarly, have you considered the wrist bands that wake you close to your alarm time when you are in light sleep, rather than a blaring alarm jerking you awake?

    • I dont think the wristband will fix my problem. I really would want good music to get me out of bed :/

      Thanks though

  • +1

I don't know if you can get smart bulbs for that cheap. I bought one on amazon for $20 USD. It was bluetooth so you could control it via an app on your phone. You could tell the light to go on and off at certain times.

You'd need to figure out a way to automate turning on your TV, setting the correct HDMI setting for your chrome cast , open youtube etc.

    • I've noticed that if I play a video on my phone and connect to chromecast, my TV automatically turns on, and plays the video on the correct HDMI port. (Interestingly cool).

But I'm connected to a soundbar which needs to be manually turned on (WHAT A PAIN!!!!).

      • Look at the Logitech harmony hub. It'll do what you want and you can combine it with. Belkin lights. You'll need to spend more than $15. The entire set up might cost $150 ish though

  • Sounds good keep us posted. Also since you are in uni study automation and give us some laundry bots. I need some bad haha lol.

  • Get Wemo Starter kit at Bunnings "https://www.bunnings.com.au/belkin-home-automation-wemo-led-bayon-bulb-kit_p4420428" (bayonet) or Price match at Officeworks for about $65. Get a Google Home and Chromecast. Use www.ifttt.com to automate.
My hallway lights turn on and off sunset and sunrise. Works a treat (using Wemo only for that).
