Curtains/Blinds, Insect Screen, Painting, Flooring - prices/quotes/best practices? Airtasker?

I'm located in Sydney and am looking at getting the stuff in subject done to an investment property.

Wondering if any of you have any recommendations as to where to go, best practices, approximate quotes, etc.

I understand I've asked this in a very vague way but that's primarily because I am really new to this stuff and am virtually clueless.

It is a three bedroom penthouse apartment and I am looking at getting the floorboards replaced in all three bedrooms (prob approx 3x3m). It is currently timber floorboards (the wooden kind with cracks in the middle) and I want to replace it with something that doesn't creak when you step on it or have cracks.

The living room also has the same timber floorboards which I also intend to replace - not sure on the dimensions of the living room.

I've thought of hiring people off Airtasker to help complete some of the tasks. Does anyone have any advice around that?

If more info is required to answer some questions, please feel free to ask away.

    • Ah, that's the site I've seen advertised at train stations! Couldn't remember the name but you've reminded me. Thanks!

I think I've heard of them before. Will look into it. They look like a hipages.com.au but more "professional" version (where hipages is a bit more like airbnb). Thanks.

If I wanted 1000 paperclips folded into love hearts I would hire someone from Airtasker. If I wanted home improvement stuff done, and I'd have to live with such work daily, I'd hire a professional or at least a semi-professional. The best thing you can do if someone on Airtasker does a shit job of your paint is to leave a negative review and then have a fight with them over the $80 you promised to pay him.

    • I like this analogy.. and you've effectively told me not to use Airtasker. And I will accept i.

My blinds experience. +1 to Hipages (used for blinds) and Serviceseeking (used for electrician). These are better than Airtasker as you can see profession specific reviews + any registration #s (e.g. electrician #). Will be doing flooring (sanding, polishing) probably through Serviceseeking in the future so would be interested in seeing how you go.

    • Ah, ok thanks. That's good to know.

So in summary I've got these 3 options really:

      • Hipages
      • Oneflare
      • Serviceseeking
      • Airtasker (probably not for this stuff but something to keep in mind for less important stuff)
      • Well all of the sites just save you from calling up each tradie say from the phonebook/newspaper and comparing prices and checking reviews. Once you get quotes from these sites, you'll have to chase them all up via text message/phone calls.

        • Still sounds beneficial to me!

In fact I filled in a form on hipages last night and I got 3 responses really quickly. I'm pleasantly surprised at how quick they were and how keen they are to provide me with a quote, even more so when you consider that we're in the middle of the Christmas/NYE holiday period.

  • How did you go with all of this?

    • Property manager engaged professionals that he's dealt with so I didn't end up dealing with it myself.

However, I did go ahead and obtain quotes so I met with 3 guys. I don't know what the standard is but I didn't get a particularly "professional" feel from any of them. On a scale of 1/10 in terms of professionalism, I would give one a 2/10, another a 4/10 and the last a 5/10.
