Anyone else HATE the new look OzBargain?

Sorry, it's just….UGH! I hate pages that force themselves into teeny tiny little fixed pixel dimmensions inside my browser window. I have a 24" screen and I want to make use of it. When the page only wants to take up a 3rd of the available real estate, it's just annoying.

Might have to bust out greasemonkey/stylish and figure out how to script it back to normal if it stays like this.

Sorry guys, just my opinion.

  • @yamumma — Actually I doubt the old layout will look nice on a 24" screen with 1920 pixels across. As much as I like fluid layouts, I also realised that a website only looks best on the developers' screen.

By the way, if you happen to have a 24" LCD monitor, may I suggest that you don't maximise the browser window? You have so much screen real estate you can fit extra widgets on the screen to "multi-task". I too have a wide screen, but I always keep my Firefox/IE window at 1024 pixels wide.

  • I'm liking the new layout. I don't have a 24" screen, so I can't comment much. It looks nice on a 19" screen for me!

  • Congratulations scotty on taking the site out of beta.

I don't hate the new look but the older one was kinder to my 30" monitor. However, I appreciate the developer issues and OzBargain is far from alone in employing a narrow central column - I can count on one hand the number of my favourite sites that make full use of the screen width.

Would it be possible to create a layout optimised for say 1600 pixel width that registered users could set in their preferences? I think that would be a good option for the increasing number of people with 20"+ monitors. But not having that option won't keep me away ;)

The only other thing I would mention is that while I'm a fan of minimalism, the almost complete lack of colour is a little austere. Do you think you might look at that in future?

Thanks for your hard work scotty and I look forward to seeing the OzBargain community grow.

Hmm. Okay. Maybe when I see "OzBargain to support fluid layout for people with big monitors and maximise every window" on those online petition site :)

I'll keep that in my todo list.

The site has certainly taken an orange theme. I think a website "full of multiple colours" might be confusing so I guess you mean OzBargain lacks different shading (as currently most things have white background).

I am still tinkering with the theme and will definitely touch up with different shades here and there although the overall colour theme will stay the same.

        Cheers :)

Yep. It's particularly pronounced for me because of the vast amount of white on the screen, but is probably less distinct on smaller monitors.

No need to do anything drastic. A full colour title header is all I would suggest (i.e. have the orange box around Oz extend all the way to the right, or something along those lines).

  • I like it now.

I was wondering if it's possible to have a "favorites" thingy where you click and it ads the deal to your favorites in your account? Kinda like what youtube have in terms of favorites/

I usually uss multiple computers and often dont remember which/where the deal is. >.<

    • Good idea.

  • it looks good. keep it up.

sometimes the world doesn't revolve around your monitor, so I think that's normal.

    • I think I will make it into fluid layout by default but it will only look best at 1024px width — no guarantee on other window sizes. Unfortunately I am typing this comment on my Eee PC as I left my notebook in the office. With fixed width, at least you still have a sane main content area.

  • Is it possible when clicking on an external link, it will open a new tab or new window rather than navigate out from ozbargain webpage?
Because everytime i need to hit back or click on my history to get back to ozbargain webpage …

    • You can try Ctrl-Click to open it in a new window/tab. Alternatively, you can now set this behaviour as default under your user preference. See this forum thread for details:
