Missing out on bargains, then seeing it selling on Gumtree for higher price

Hi fellow Ozbargainers!

I was browsing gumtree today, and noticed that a lady had just put up her "unwanted gifts" which comprised of several different attachments for the Kenwood mixer. This caught my attention only because I was unable to purchase anything from the $10 sale (which was posted on ozbargain recently) due to the website/ traffic even though I tried several times over a 3 day period. Seeing this lady's post really irritated me due to the fact that:

1) I couldnt get my hands on anything from the super sale
2) She is claiming them as "unwanted gifts" even though in one of the images, it is a screenshot of HER order/cart on the Kenwood website
3) she is selling them at $50 each which is a $40 profit on each one

I understand that with sales, it's first in best dressed, but I can't help getting so annoyed - yes I could build a bridge and get over it, but just wanted to have your opinion on this topic.

What are your thoughts on buying cheap - reselling it at an inflated price - resulting in making other legitimate buyers (me) miss out? Would you guys do this?

I really wanted a Harmony Hub, missed it at Dick Smith where they were like $30. So I put out an appeal on here. A user contacted me via PM, and said he would sell it to me for $90. I thought that was a bit steep so we negotiated it down to $80. All was fine. Guy gave me his mobile number to arrange to go pick it up. I texted him all was good, then he stopped replying to my messages, having left work early to go get it. Really wasted my time and left a sour taste in my mouth. I forgot about it and started looking for one 6 months later. Found one on gumtree at $120. Same suburb, same user. Just greedy. If anyone wants to know who to avoid trying to do business with on here, PM me.

LOLLLLLL these "unwanted gifts", sellers selling on free or brought very cheaply and selling slightly under preimum then you got buyers like me that hoard alot of cash for these situation, go low balling.

  • It's a big business for some people. If you're curious about it, this is worth a listen:

    http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2015/06/03/411777635/episo…

Some people have time to trawl the internet for bargains. Some people have time to check out ozbargain every hour. Some people don't have the time, but have the money and are willing to pay for convenience.

Advertising them as 'unwanted gifts' is a lie, but perhaps makes the goods acceptable to the gumtree crowd.

I don't like it, but I can tolerate it IF those same people also post deals. If they don't, they're just leaches, and they deserve whatever misfortune comes their way.

Alot of the time bargains posted here are as much luck of the draw as anything else

  • don't be angry, just feel sorry for them that this is the only way these people could make a buck

my personal rule is never buy from these people no matter how badly I wanted the item

and TBH I don't even look at Gumtree

Take a look at Nintendo Mini's. People hoarding them then selling for $300 a pop. It's the scalpy market and nothing you can do.

People are blatant about it too as it's not illegal. Check out this Asian Pharmacy in a shopping district I saw on the weekend. Just one of many all doing the same thing. Yes that's baby formula all being shipped to China

There are many many leechers on this site who will broden the crap out of any deal to make a quick buck

  • no sure why OP is annoyed over $10? FoMO can do this to people.

couple of kenwood accessories! that's nothing, I have made over 15k from a bit of this and that on ozbargain

  • Well you should follow standard gumtree moron protocol and message the people selling the item with:

"Bro, can take this off your hands for (advertised price * 60%) in cash today. What do you say?"

I listed a PSVR on there recently for a price lower than I paid for it, and was getting the usual lowball offers despite it being out of stock literally everywhere at the time.

    • -1

and if the seller agrees to the lowball price, turn up with even less cash :) (seems to be the typical scumtree strategy)

        FW190

I had this happen, drove two hours to me with 1150 instead of 1200, claimed fuel
I said we agreed on a price, told him 1200 or p*ss off
        He got the extra 50

I hate scum like that who AGREE on a price FIRM and then try and rip you off more

I was actually going to just shut the door on him to be honest and make him waste 4 hours return trip but I have a better attitude than that

    • w8 couldn't agree more

4 letter and then 3 letters usually sorts them out
or I just reply waste their time

  • only thing seems wrong to me is to say "unwanted gift" it's kind of dishonest. If she just put it up with the price then take it or leave it. Everyone is free to sell their stuff at whatever price they want. I've sold stuff on eBay that I bought on sale for way more than I paid, not because i put it at a high price but people just kept bidding it up at auction. If they want it it's up to them how much they want to pay. Just don't like it when they say "new" when it's not new or "super rare sold out" when it's everywhere. If I grab a bargain at 90% sale at myer, I'm not obliged to sell it at 90% off. I'll sell it at market price but won't say "unwanted gift bought from some exclusive place in Paris"

  • It is wrong if it is a product of fundamental need, but it is alright if it is a superfluous product.

For example, if someone was pulling retail arbitrage on massive amounts of rice in a developing country, that should be illegal.

but to capitalize on accessories or tech goods is alright I suppose.

    get over it.

you sound jealous you didn't think of it first.

What are your thoughts on buying cheap - reselling it at an inflated price - resulting in making other legitimate buyers (me) miss out? Would you guys do this?

I wanted to do this with the masters last day sale but i only found out about their last day sale when it was too late and i saw in the news about people buying boxes worth of stuff for $5 a bulk box of mouse traps etc. i know everything is on ebay. there is no other reason people are buying bulk boxes of mousetraps for $5 a box unless it's to resell it on ebay. why not do this if you have the opportunity?

    • Exactly Honeycomb, buyer and sellers market
OP has clearly done it before and whos to say he wasn't going to do the exact same thing buy 2x sets for 100 and resell for a profit

I stand by my original comment, she got in before you, she makes a profit, early bird gets the worm, the later comer gets the dirt.

He doesn't sound jealous at all, but you sound like you need to justify yourself.
We are not trying to undermine the fundermentals of capitalism
eg; buy low and sell high
It's just these people with nothing better to do than to inject themselves into the supply chain making prices higher for everyone
Stuff them, there are enough middle men already adding no value to products, without adding more parasites

      • +1

        +1 to Beach Bum

last thing we need is more greedy bottom feeders trying to squeeze themselves into the supply chain

  • Too bad you can't sell fruit Gumtree; man got some sour grapes to purge…

  • So what?

Businesses do this all the time.

This is how a lot of CHinese people make extra cash on the side that is tax free. I know someone who makes $5000 every month by shipping products overseas and selling them at a higher price. TAX EFFING FREE!

    • As I said, adding no value and contributing nothing
Just don't complain when this site becomes useless to people who aren't eBay/Gumtree resellers
I would like to see some purchases restricted to one per person so we all get a chance at a bargain
but I understand this would upset some peoples business model
      Good luck to you
By the way I have 20 boxes I have marked with an x if your interested

Just don't complain when this site becomes useless to people who aren't eBay/Gumtree resellers

Why would I complain? This site isn't that useful to me. More of a reminder for eBay sales. That's about it.

    • yeah, local parents/babies couldn't get baby formulas, and no tax are collected, mean while us tax payers are probably funding their kid's education, but yet you seem to think they are some kind of heroes? (if I have misinterpreted your post, my apologies)

      • -1

but yet you seem to think they are some kind of heroes? (

I hate communists. My pops and his grandpops were in the war and died fighting many of them. If I was up to me, I would send all these foreign Chinese (NOT CHINESE-AUSTRALIANS) people home and charge them massive taxes on their property purchases here in Australia.
I live in the city, my entire street is filled with dozens of houses and apartments owned by Chinese nationals. Half the time they're empty. What's worse is they don't speak English.
        At least they're quiet.

I'm not going to blame them for taking advantage of a lucrative system. I blame our China loving governments who take foreign bribes (I mean donations) from state owned companies in CHina or those who have an affiliation with the communist regime.

        • Their no longer communists
          They are a Mafia state
Ok see you edited your comment
          To make less sense
While I agree with the sentiment
You need to have a quick look at a history book to know who was shooting at who and why

        • @Beach Bum:

          Their not communists

Mate, I don't even know anymore. It seems like the only countries who do well in this turd of a world are the ones who are willing to get their hands dirty. Sick of being trampled by rich foreigners.

        • @fredz:just remember this around election time,
          And Stand for office
You don't have to know what your talking about to be a politician any more
