Physiotherapy Clinics Sydney

I'm looking for a decent physiotherapy clinic in Sydney which engages in "mutually beneficial" payment arrangements. Before I explain what I mean by this, I'll give some context - I currently have health insurance that agrees to pay back 60% rebate on claims. The dental clinic I go to is an example of a place that engages in these "mutually beneficial" payment arrangements. Say the cost of dental checkup is listed as $100.

a) Under standard payment arrangements, the dental clinic receives $100 as revenue, then requests $60 from health insurer, and I end up paying $40 out of pocket.

b) Under these "mutually beneficial" arrangements, the dental clinic jacks up the price to $166.67, then requests $100 (=166.67 x 60%) from health insurer, and I pay zilch out of pocket. The dental clinic allows (and encourages this) as they benefit from the jacked up prices.

I was very surprised to see such practices when I went to my dental clinic and I've heard that this is quite common in many asian clinics. Does anyone know (or can recommend) any physio clinics that engage in this?

  • I saw a NO GAP sign on their store front at Rockdale Physiotherapy & Sport Injury Centre. I don't use physiotherapy, so I don't know if it's good or not. Hope this help.

    • Thanks for the suggestion. Is NO GAP the term for this payment scheme?

  • +1

Wouldn't this 100% claim system just absorb your benefits quicker? It would be ok if you're only doing a few sessions, but if you needed ongoing care long term you would be left out of funds…no?

Also, you wouldn't want the health fund to get wind of this, as they would no longer honour the service provider…

    • Yes it will absorb benefits quicker for long term care, but a few standard massage sessions will probably do it for me, not a serious injury.

Health funds are not going to get wind of this, it is done in a very concealed fashion - for example, a standard massage may be recorded as a standard massage with additional acupuncture services. Apparently this system has been going on for ages, government has also been trying to clamp down on this, but there is nothing they can do, only way they can really be sure of the service provided is if they stormed into the clinic during the session.
