Where Do I Go from Prepaid if I Want a New Phone

Hi guys,

I'm currently on prepaid using a Samsung Galaxy S3. I want to get a new phone beacuse mine's pretty much dead.

At the moment, I'm not sure if I should get a phone on a plan, or get a phone unlocked and get a bring your own sim deal from somewhere.

I'm a light user who rarely uses their phone. I've lived off no mobile data until now but I'd like to get a bit for random browsing here and there. I don't think I need a current gen phone, but just something that works, won't lag and can install a custom launcher. I won't be playing games that much, most likely using my phone for emails, internet messaging and probably Google maps.

If I were to get on a phone on a plan I'd love some recommendations. If I were to bring my own phone and get a sim plan, recommendations for those as well. If I were to get a phone plan, I wouldn't want to spend more than $50/month. A bring your own phone, I'd want to stop at $30/month. But also for me being such a light user, I feel like $50 and $30 a month are really pushing it and not worth it.

Any other recommendations are welcome and encouraged as long as you think they're reasonable from what I've described above.

Thanks

Edit 1: Looking for a mobile plan that favours mobile data over calls/sms since I rarely use those things.

I'm also a light phone user (well, I don't call much, but I do use my phone for music streaming and Redditing / Ozbargaining on the go).

Mobile phone plans typically lock you into a contract for around 24 months. While it's tempting to sign onto a phone plan because you don't have to outlay a fairly large sum for the handset itself, you typically get less value on the number of calls / amount of data you're allotted in the plan.

And as for light users on a tighter budget, it's probably not worth getting a phone plan — phone plans are mostly for when you want an expensive flagship like an iPhone or S7 and you can't afford to pay the $800 dollars up front for the device.

If you only want a mid-end phone — say, a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Prime or Nexus 5x, it's best to buy them yourself and jump on a month-to-month SIM plan.

In any case, here's a short list of plans under $30 dollars a month:

Telechoice - No lock in, $20 a month, 2GB data, Unlimited SMS & MMS, $500 call credit INCL. International calls

Jenee Unlimited plan — No Lock in, $25 a month, 2.5GB data, Unlimited Calls, SMS, SMS, but does not incl. International calls.

Jenee Pennywise plan — No Lock in, $18 a month, 1.8gb of data, 200 minutes of calls, unlimited SMS. You then customize this plan with 2 choices (no cost)… an additional 200 minutes of calls OR an additional 200 megabytes of data.

Vaya - No Lock in, range from $18 to $22 a month, 1.5 GB or 2GB of data, $650 worth of calls ($18 plan) or Unlimited calls ($22 plan), No international calls on either plan.

    • Thanks scrimshaw for your reply.

Since I'm not really experienced in how much mobile data I'm going to be using, how would I estimate my usage? Would it just be a case of trying one out for a month and then upgrading/downgrading as I see fit?

Also your pick for the best value plan if I make no international calls and barely call anyone/barely use text?

Do you know of any plans that heavily favour data instead of calls/SMS? It seems like a waste if I'm paying for those but rarely use them. I probably make a couple of calls a month and a similar numbner of texts.

      Cheers!

      • If you are more interested in Data than CAlls, the Jenee Pennywise plan for $20 would give you 2.5 gigs of data per month.
The number of calls is pretty paltry at 200mins a month, but at least the data is generous for the price.

how would I estimate my usage?

there's no way to estimate how much data you use. It would depend on your browsing habits, what apps you use, social media / messaging / etc.

I use the data metering app 3g watchdog to keep track of my data usage. I just change my usage patterns based on how much data I have left for the rest of the month. For me, 1.8GB of data is enough for checking Ozbargain and Reddit just about everyday.

I stream a little music since I have a music subscription service, and that takes up most of my data allowance.

        • So far this is the closest thing to what I'm looking for (I think). I'm going to wait it out and see if any other ozBargainers have any other suggestions for me. Thanks!

As a light user myself, I would get a prepaid Optus phone like the one above and then get on a Pay As You Go sim plan from Amaysim with add in 1 gb of internet data https://www.amaysim.com.au/plans/data-plans or https://www.amaysim.com.au/plans/mobile-plans. This way I have the option of upgrading my phone every year.

Otherwise get a S5 from Virgin on a $40 plan for 24 months - although phone is dated but it was a flagship phone sometime back. This also depends whether you are living in an urban or metro area.

I expect to get a bit of neg ratings for this advice but this is a forum where everybody can voice their opinions - you don't neg someone just because your opinion is different.

    • A funny thing I always thought was that month by month stuff adds up to be really really expensive. I especially remember this from when I was in high school and the Motorola Razr released. But now that I'm older and can do some basic math (funily enough, I'm at university math gradute) I feel like I was incredibly dumb and overestimated their cost as a youngin' (maybe beacuse I just couldn't really afford the $30/month that everything was selling for). Thanks for your reply and suggestion MT2010!

  • bring my own phone

I'm with Vaya. I paid a year in advance and it worked out to be $12 a month for unlimited calls (Oz + mobile), unlimited texts and 1 Gigabyte of data. I use my phone for ozbargain, ebay, etc. I don't use the data for youtube or video stuff. so far I have never gone over the data limit.

I'd suggest a china droid - my lenovo note 3 has been good (though touchscreen is starting to crap out on one side - but I have dropped it a few times) -originally cost ~$130 delivered about 18 months ago.

    Aldi is another option
$25 unlimited calls and texts and 2.25GB no lock in some international.

Vodafone gets close if you want a semi major provider.

Xiaomi Redmi are good phones. If you are keeping this for a few years, try and get something with more than 2GB of ram.
