Wanted CHEAP flights to Hong kong/Taiwan

Hi all,

I'm planning to go to Hong Kong/Taiwan in late sept this year (I'm in Sydney), and struggling to find cheap flights. Cathay/Qantas cost about $1500 return. The cheapest I found was with Tiger (but it's Perth to HK (via singapore)), so it's a long trip (syd->per->Sing->HK and back)

Does anyone know where I can get cheaper prices, I have searched cheapflights.com.au, but they are mostly indirect flight thru singapore or perth. My ideal flight would be Syd->Taiwan(1wk)->HK and return flight is HK->syd.

Thanks all for your help :)

  • Have you tried China Airlines, the Taiwanese carrier? On their online site http://www.china-airlines.com/en/index.htm I can get $1140 return from Sydney, and $220 return Taipei/Hong Kong. Had to convert that last from TWD. Not exactly the routing you want, but within your price limit.

  • Thanks but do you think if there are lower prices?

    • Maybe if are willing to do some seriously twisted itinerary like Syd-GCoast GC-KL KL-Taipei-KL-HK-KL KL-GC GC-Syd, all the ones in the middle by Airasia. How much is your time worth?

      • Yeah China Airlines are 99% likely your best chance. They are always the cheapest I have found, and I flew with them once Bris-Taipei-Vancouver return and they were actually fine, no better or worse really than any other airline. We had a one night stop over and they put us up in a nice room at a golf club/resort.

        • eva air will easily beat china airlines by 20bucks…hahaha

      • Thanks greenpossum, my time dont worth that much, but that just sound way too complicated…which means more could go wrong….thanks anyway :)

  • Try to talk to a travel agent in china town. China Airline and EVA airline always have bargain tickets if it's low season.

    • Thanks Katsuya, I will talk to the travel agents in China town, thanks for the tip.

      • Actually what's the difference between going to a travel agent VS book directly with airline website VS booking it via flights comparison website (like cheapflights.com.au)?

        • Travel Agent charges fees but gives you better seats and also more potential to find a reserved tix at a busier season.

Booking on airline website is cheaper, more streamlined and you get your tix faster. Nothing really negative about booking directly with the airline.

With comparison websites, it's like a Russian roulette type. They operate similar to travel agents but without much fees.

Please correct me if I am wrong. But that's what I know about the three options!

          • @CuteChocobo: What I often do is get the best quote I can online and then ask the travel agent to match that. The drawback is that you must be prepared to buy if they match. That's only fair.

Sometimes you need a travel agent because the routing is weird and can't be put together online.

  • Thanks Cutechocobo and greenpossum, I think I may get the best online price and get travel agents to match it. BTW I never knew you could "bargain" with the travel agents…I only bargain with things like buying a plasma TV… :)

    • hey what interesting post you have here. im (wit gf) also planning exactly the same thing.. HK/TW on sept or late oct. i heard oct/nov is better, not so hot in HK ?
how many ppl you are going wit?
can we bargain more if we going to buy more ticks? lol

  • do you want to give me your dates to hkg and taiwan? i will see if i can something better for u..
do u have to stay in taiwan for 1 week? because i should be able to get you return flight from sydney to hkg and stopover in taiwan for 4 days and 3 nights by paying taxes and not getting another ticket

  • wow thats cool cycnycangel, thanks alot!
