My wife had to leave to her fathers sick health he has since passed away and is returning to Australia, She booked a flight with QANTAS but that comes to around $2400, anyone with ides would be appreciated.

January is an expensive time to fly, and one way International tickets can be as expensive as return, so you might be out of luck if you want a reasonable flight time via LAX (either Qantas/AA or Virgin/Delta).
SkyScanner shows little much cheaper unless you go via Asia and even then you might only save $200.
