Generic Super-Market Brand Products. Share/Rate Your Favourites

OzBargainers love to save a dime, just as the supermarkets do in their quest for increased margins amidst the so-called 'supermarket wars'.

There have been a few threads over the years discussing generic products, but in my personal shopping recently, I've noticed that many of my former house brand staples either no longer exist or have been modified (couple of examples: Woolworths Home Brand Tasty Cheese - deleted, replacement tastes worse. Coles Smart Buy Chunky Peanut Butter - now fewer chunks).

I'm keen to hear from the savvy OzB community which generic products you swear by so we can all benefit.

I figure this might be a pretty handy thread to refer back to at a point, so would propose that if you're listing a product, put the name of the first product/s at the top of your comment in bold, with subsequent items in italics before any commentary (if desired). Equally, if you're making comparisons between products, use greater than (>), less than (<) or equal to (=) symbols at the top of your comment.

I'll get things started to add my 2c but also to serve as an example :)

  • Woolworths Home Brand Garlic Bread > La Famiglia Garlic Bread > Coles Smart Buy Garlic Bread
Woolworths Essentials Crumbed Chicken Nuggets = Ingham Crumbed Chicken Nuggets
Coles Macadamia and Caramel Ice Cream

I always keep garlic bread + chicken nuggets in stock in my freezer. Never know when unexpected guests might pop in, and it's always nice to have some simple snacks ready to knock up quickly. Honestly can't find fault with the Woolies variants of these - crowd hits every time.

I heated up two loaves the other day, and happened to have one of each we and la fam. I found the la fam more "buttery". I don't think it is worth the extra cost, but if it is on 50% markdown I buy and freeze it.

  • Wow whole egg mayo is good, in line with Thomy.
Coles granulated fair trade instant coffee is in line with Moccona.
Coles fair trade whole bean and ground coffee is preferable to any major coffee brands (but some of the specialist brands are better).
Butter, milk, soft drinks (except cola) are all equivalents.
Wow $6kg block tasty cheese is as good/better than Bega (but not as good as mainland).
Wow gold/finest pasta is all good, the egg parpadelle is excellent.
Wow home brand pasta sauce is good (not the bolgnese).

      Savvy-ass! ;)

  • Colesworths Rolled Oats -> blender = powdered oats. Or pay $80/kg for the same thing in a package claiming that it isn't the same thing.

You can also do the comparison trick compare the nutritional information between generic brands and major ones sometimes you will get a perfect match bingo X makes Y product for Coles / Woolies etc…

    • Yup, between this & the batching info printed on most packaging, it's not too hard to track down where generics are coming from! :)
