Opal Card Recharge at Woolies Stores

I'm really surprised that not all 'Woolie's' stores have the Opal Recharge. Why is that? something to do with the 'everyday rewards' program or is it just for Woolies that close to Train Stations that have them?

  • It really depends on government, not you want to operate Top out then you can get it.

If there is shop next store have opal top up then Woolie's may not have top up

    • It also depends if there are already Opal retailers near by. Crows nest is in a well serviced area so Epay the company which has the contract for the Pearl Readers in stores and the epay machine which manages the loading of the funds takes its directive from TFNSW with establishing new Opal Retailers.

Basically any Woolworths store which previously sold bus tickets and MyMulti tickets where immediately an "Opal Retailer", stores which previously did not were striked off the list.

An exception to this was my local Woolworths North Strathfield. It got Opal shortly after Opal was made an available travel method, however it never sold bus tickets and My Multi Tickets. The area only had one Opal retailer which ironically is the petrol station next door, and the variety store which was a little further north sold tickets. They may have declined to have a Epay/Pearl Reader for the over head and cost, not to mention that their operating hours were a small window between 9am-6pm daily, outside of general travel times for the common worker who starts work at 9am.

Have you read about the Rozelle retailer who were denied becoming an Opal Retailer?

This is the news article pertaining to the story: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/inner-west/bureaucrats-deny-a-shop-in-rozelle-permission-to-sell-opal-cards-even-though-a-busy-bus-stop-is-right-outside-its-front-door/news-story/5dba794e4aaf6ce3ca65565748480f50

Woolies decides whether or not they will offer topups at a particular store. Nothing says they have to offer them in all stores.

BTW, Opal topups don't count towards ER, but do towards the petrol voucher.

Also, a handful of Coles offer Opal topups too, so it's not a Woolies exclusive thing.

Can pay by egift cards too :D (5%-5.5% via CR or Groupon.. or more by Groupon Codes, 7% consistently if you buy it from POTM)

To OP: Probably due to proximity to public transport services and their expected amount of customers that use pub transport?
Top Ryde Woolworths has Opal and that doesn't have any train stations near it.
It's in a shopping centre too.

A lot of buses pass Top Ryde though.

        • True, just near public transport not necessarily near a train station

Crows Nest Woolies doesn't have Opal topup.

Broadway Shopping Centre, and Balgowlah are two Coles in Sydney that offer Opal topup.

      • crows nest woolies is shithouse anyway

        • Meh, it's just another Woolies. Did you get offended there one day?

        • @greenpossum:

it, and all other recently built woolies (looking at you lane cove) seem to have been designed by a schizophrenic. The layouts make no sense. They keep trying to do new stuff because they're losing market share to coles, but all the new stuff is just annoying. I honestly preferred the older small woolies that was on the same site. Also, they randomly run out of different fresh veggies

@terminal2k: Ah well, vote with your feet then.

        • @terminal2k: I know that "schizophrenic", I used to work with their children.

I have to agree, some of the layouts are a little haphazard. Crows Nest is understandably built the way it is, they were trying to maximise the area to fit a full range store rather than to stick with a smaller single level store as it previously was.

There is not much in terms of full range supermarkets in the Crows Nest area unless you go to Big Bear at Neutral Bay or Woolies in Cremorne, Cammeray or Lane Cove, Ritchies IGA closed and getting to Greenwood Plaza or Coles and Aldi North Sydney can be a challenge for some, especially the elderly.

        • @theone83:

I'm up the highway between crows nest and lane cove so I usually do my proper shop at the coles in lane cove. I think coles are building at the old franklins/iga in crows nest so there should be an alternative again up there in a year or two

        • @terminal2k: Seriously, another Coles, that means there will be 3 in less than a 3 KM from each other. I just remembered there is also the Coles inside the Forum at St Leonards.

      • true, I haven't been to those retailers, from my area, it's almost woolworths exclusive.

  • well i"m sure you haven't been to Liverpool woollies
