Headlamp for trekking

I've got a cheap headlamp that i got from aldi. That is good enough for over night camping trips.

However, i was after more decent headlamp which can last for upto couple of weeks. I guess something like what the mountaineers wear on long hikes.

Anyone recommend a good one where battery lasts a while.

I saw black diamond apot for $60. Is that considered economic range?

  • Get a Black Diamond Revolt which can be rechargeable :)

    • Looks great. However, $95. Anything cheaper?

  • I am using Silva - not particularly cheap, but very small, waterproof, and one of the very few with a separate red LED (as opposed to a red filter sliding in front of a standard, white LED). Petzl is most widely used by people who must have reliable headlamp (mountaineers, police, rescue services, etc. Many models, some very expensive). None of them will last weeks, unless used infrequently, at low power, or with a large belt battery - LEDs providing light use fair amount of battery power. If this is important you may also think about a small, portable solar power panel (also handy for mobile phones and other equipment). Whichever model you select, get one with red light option: less harmful to one's night vision. Good article explaining why this is so: http://biology.stackexchange.com/questions/2075/does-red-lig…

    • Thanks. Thats what I meant. So, last for weeks (1-2 hour usage a day) in low usage. Just picked up a good solar panel from ebay sale :). I'll look into petzl. Any model you recommend?

      • Glad to be of help. From what you describe I would say that Petzl Tikka+ would suit you very well: https://www.petzl.com/I/en/Sport/ACTIVE-headlamps/TIKKA-PLUS…
Many places sell it, typically around $70 - $60.

Silva I mentioned before is practically identical, but difficult to find in Australia. While I never used Black Diamond mentioned here before is also appears to be a good brand. Whatever you decide, avoid cheap product and lesser known brands which on paper may look similar. An unreliable, poor quality headlamp is as useful as a box of wet matches :)
