Ordered Furniture on Sunday - It's on Sale on Wednesday ($500 less). Requested Refund for difference but Suspicious.

First post, so please be gentle (also somewhat fresh to Australia so please excuse obvious questions).

I've ordered a couch on Sunday and paid in full with CC ($1800).

Last night saw an ad showing the same couch being on sale starting this Wednesday - for $1300.

The couch is supposed to be delivered on Wednesday.

I've called the store and asked about getting a refund for the difference. The representative put me on hold and talked to manager and said I can either get store credit or refund and the information was supposedly on the order itself.

I have a sneaky suspicion it won't be that easy and that the store will deny everything. Am I being paranoid?

The sale doesn't start until tomorrow and the couch is supposed to be delivered after 7am.

Should I go to the store today and request a written notice about the refund? Or just cancel the order and re-order the couch again tomorrow?

  • You paid with CC, meaning you can use charge back facilities. And you also have a record showing the amount you paid in the bank statement.

nothing to fear my paranoid friend. You should be able to just cancel and re-order, assuming they want your business.

    • On the other hand, if you use a charge back, they may not want to sell to you a second time. That may not bother some people, but if you want their furniture in particular, it could be an issue.

Better off getting confirmation on the refund before the delivery happens.

I don't think a charge back would work if they could prove delivery of the item.

  • Really irritating when this happens and the sales assistant don't let you know in advance. But the good thing is many shops are happy to provide a refund of the difference because it protects their reputation and makes you more likely to buy from them again in future. I wouldn't worry about it.

    • That being said, try to talk to the original salesperson that sold you the item. Or the manager you spoke to.

Welcome to Oz. Hope you enjoy your stay or move here.

Consumers may request a refund for goods or services. However, the business can reject a request for refund if it's a change of mind.

  • Too bad. So sad 😔

  • At this stage you probably can't cancel the order as you have bought it and they have arranged delivery; they are not obligated to allow you to cancel it or refund you money. They will probably give you the discount, so I wouldn't worry until it becomes an issue; then ring them up. In those situations you are best to get the details of the person you are talking to at the store, so if something does go wrong you can say "such and such said I would get it at the discount price". Most places are pretty sensible about this as they want to see repeat customers. It is annoying when they don't give you the heads up on the sales coming up, but it is worth asking the question when buying something. If there is an issue, once it has been delivered, then it might be best to go back to the store in person, with your paperwork, and sort this out with them calmly. It may take time for a partial refund to go through, etc.

  • Better off going into the store with your receipt and get the manager to put it back onto your card now.

does your CC have a price protection guarantee thing?

  • dont accept delivery……

  • Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

Turned out I was just paranoid and the store refunded us the difference on Wednesday :)
