Gumtree Scam yes or no?

I found a 750ti on Gumtree for $15 posted about 15 minutes ago.
After messaging and calling the seller he sounded very legit and offered to add a GTX 960 that he was also selling for $20.

So before paying him via PayPal what do you guys think? I guess with this low amount of money it's worth taking the risk.

  • What's the worst that could happen?! Oh yeah, he could send an empty box or something and PayPal don't give you a refund for whatever reason… oh yeah, because you send it as a "family and friends" payment

If it's too good to be true…

    • Would asking him to send a photo of the package before sending it in the mail be better?

      • +5

Does this in any way prevent him from sending an empty box? If not: no, it wouldn't be better.

  • I saw a GTX 1080 on gumtree for $200 today, almost got excited and the person had their full name, turns out iIhad mutual friends on Fb. Tried to email and post came up sold.

      Sounds like bullshit.

The guy could easily make $500+

"I guess with this low amount of money it's worth taking the risk".

Thinks the 20 other people he's currently messaging.

  • If he is saying inspections are welcome, I don't see how it can be a scam if a person comes and checks on it then buys it… But then he could be dealing with multiple people at once through paypal… So it could be possible.

    • +3

Oh you want to come and inspect it?
Sorry I already sold it, forgot to take down the ad!

/keeps scamming others in the mean time without taking down the ad

  • Could be stolen? Considering the fact he says the GTX960 comes with no box or cd

    • +1

even if it is stolen, at that price really? either the guy doesn't know shit, or he is in desperado to sell it or he is a complete idiot, My guess is neither, probs a scam.

    • Not everyone keeps boxes for everything they ever buy.
When I used desktop PCs I never kept any boxes, half of them were in the bin before I even installed the parts.

      • I keep the box until a reasonable amount of time after the warranty is up, or keep it for storage / moving solutions, kept my PC part boxes inside of the case box.

I have a large figure collection, keep most of the boxes for the large collectable figures easier to move them in their packaging, the smaller ones and amiibo never. The amount of boxes is too damn high!

If you have to ask if it's a scam, then it is.

  • If too good to be true then it is not true.

Gumtree is cash on pick up. Any other method, you're risking never seeing your money again. Police will just laugh because you'll be the 10th person they've seen today with the same complaint.

    GTX 750 is old (2014).
People sell things for cheap because they don't want to throw them away and have it go to waste. It's easier than stuffing around with bartering and having to re-list unsold listings.

Edit: he wants to also sell a 960 for $5? Oh that sounds dodgy.

"A million calls coming in about it now." Scam.

  • +1

scam. follow the golden rule..if it seems too good to be true it probably is.. this is even so on ozbargain…if it's too cheap and a price error the deal never goes through and we all get refunded! gumtree you won't get refunded. don't be a mug if you need to ask if it's a scam then it's pretty obvious it is

  • ive bought specifically a gpu from gumtree two years ago paid with paid poypal and arrived fine kind of see below.
if you get an empty box or broken then paypal dispute that it's not working or better yet since it's a gpu fine some image online that shows a problem with the screen which would be a gpu problem and send that as evidence.

but let me say this pay extra and get it insured cause aus post are fking useless mine came with a hole through the package the outside postal box and the gpu box lucky the guy wrapped it well for mine.

honestly paypal has never failed me but when making payment paypal will tell you if your protected.
seller always pay's the fees so DO NOT SEND FRIENDS AND FAMLY! < just making that part clear lol

Why you dont ask for pay in delivery?
There is a service in Australia Post, they collect the money from you when you collect the item. If he is honest will accept that.

      • the seller already charging OP a $22 for express. so cancel the express option and post it with cash on delivery ($9.25 COD fee + $13 postage) ~$23
the only different he will wait a couple of days to receive the item.

    gumtree = scumtree

  • +2

    Gumtree = cash on pickup.
Even if it's $20 why do you give it to a scammer. Donate to a charity instead.

  • If its genuine the its GONE ALREADY!

  • Sounds scammy.
I learnt quickly with GT 1.As a seller: sold an article to someone ,they asked if I had PP,yes I foolishly said…
"Not as Described " came back… BS.PP made me take the article back.As a seller never use PP,its stacked against the seller.
    2. as a buyer, bought a Ford tuning box ( expensive article ) got it,found out it was married to another car= paperweight. After a lot of hassle, sent back,he unmarried it-I wouldn't want to go through that again ,lots of stress, postage etc
GT is defin. better face to face

  • Cool story: there was a defendant on judge Judy who had sent the winner of an eBay auction a photo of the mobile phone.. And tried to say the auction was just for the photo. Judge Judy destroyed her of course.

(I recall plaintiff making the case that the advert said the phone is 150grams or whatever, and that the photo did not weigh that much.. Op.. Ask how much the item will weigh? :)
