Going Back to Uni Soon, Should I Get a Colour Printer or a Tablet or New Laptop?

I currently have a black and white laser printer. I need my PDF documents to be colour printed and make notes on them.

Should I get a colour laser printer or should I get a surface pro or a laptop?

I was told one note is pretty good for making notes?

First off you'll have to see whether you like hardcopy notes that you print and/or annotate or whether you prefer digital copies. Each has their pros and cons and at the end of the day it comes to personal preference about what helps you study better.

If you prefer hardcopy a colour printer would be the best bet. If you prefer digital it'd be between the Surface and a laptop. Again, it comes down to personal preference (provided you don't need amazing specs on either so a 256GB SSD with an i5 + 8GB RAM on either a Surface or laptop should suffice for general browsing + note taking + movies or anything else you'll do with it and can last you 4-5 years if you take good care of it). Have a look at the weight/feel of the keyboard etc. in person and go for what you prefer the most.

    • Thanks very much. I will go with the laptop or surface now:)

What kind of computer do you have at the moment? IMO i would buy a laptop so that you can use it for lecturer/tutes and then study and assignments inbetween classes.

Unless you plan on printing frequently or are in a course that would require you to print pretty frequently i wouldn't buy colour printer - black and white should be fine for the majority of subjects as you will be mainly printing off documents and essays. If you do require colour printing then you can always go to the uni library and pay or somewhere else eg. Officeworks

    • I have EliteBook 2570p.

I need something lighter and battery last longer.

I do not mind get something second hand from ebay or gumtree to save money :)

I would look for a ultraportable that you can fold into a tablet and then have an external mouse. See if you can try stuff out at something like JB and see what you like. Best of luck with the studies.

    • Which one will you recommend please?

      • I have a HP Spectre, which I quite like, but it is a bit heavy as a tablet. However, if you use it on a table it would be fine. In relation to a printer, there are plenty of low cost lasers at the moment. Have a look at Officeworks for the printer.

  • OP - What's your budget?

in my opinion you'll benefit more from a Surface Pro

powerful tablet and lightweight albeit battery life is not as good as a laptop there's plenty places to charge at uni these days.

if you need to print either print at uni or print at office works. If you work out the cost of a printer and prices for ink cartridges/toners you aren't saving much if anything and just paying for convenience

    • Thanks.

Surface Pro 4 is 15% on JB now.

However, do you think a second hand surface pro 3 will just do the job?

      • SP3 will most likely have adequate processing power but considering their age you'll most likely have some serious battery life problems considering battery life wasn't great to begin with.

Even SP4 the battery life could be better, but for a 700g device there's not much room for a bigger battery.

I would recommend a new one since the sale is on

what are you studying? e.g. graphic design -good GC needed, or accounting - meh, anything would do.

  • Your study style and what you're studying should indicate whether hard copy or digital notes are more useful

IMHO if you don't even know what you need, then you don't really need anything…save your money & use the uni computers & printers!

There was a study done recently proving conclusively that using simple skeleton notes & pen was the most efficacious method of note-taking in a lecture format. Just google it if you're interested, should be easy to find. No, it won't get you the wank factor of sitting there with an expensive device open doing little more than checking your Fakebook page, but it will help you learn more effectively.

Now I've saved you a packet & improved your academic skills in one comment, feel free to send me half your budget…what a bargain! ;)

  • I think you answered your own question. You want your documents printed in colour, so buy a colour printer. Why waste money on more expensive devices which it sounds like you don't need.

If you find yourself comfortable with your current PC then go ahead for a coloured laser printer.
My advice - Go for a surface Pro if it falls under your budget

  • I recently got a Surface Pro 3 (i3, 64GB) for Uni this year, and it's great (more than powerful enough to handle notetaking + PDFs and web browsing). Just added a 64GB MicroSD to bring it to 128GB total storage.

You can buy them secondhand from Reboot IT for ~$478 delivered here (depending on location), including a type cover and the stylus, and can add $50 for an extra year worth of warranty (should cover the battery at least but might be worth contacting them). The battery on mine had about ~3% wear after 80 cycles, but it's a bit of a lottery I guess.
