  • Speaking from experience with a wide range of cats: Burmese or nothing. I am very serious.

My first cat experience was with a roommate's Burmese. They're an amazing breed and I was dead set on getting a Burmese for myself from a well regarded breeder.

However, adopting cats is just so much more wholesome. Rescue cats, in my experience, are so rewarding to bring home and give a good quality of life to. You would be pretty unlikely to find a Burmese up for adoption (I've seen two in the past year), but I think restricting yourself to a breeders breed is a really shallow decision and one that isn't even guaranteed to get the result that you want.

My newest adopted cat, a white DSH with a blue and green eye, is sweeter than the amazing Burmese I first encountered when I was sharing a house. I never would've thought that would be possible if you had've suggested it to me a year or two ago

      • Totally agree with everything u say. For me unfortunately my requirement is so restrictive that I can neither afford or accomodate a Burmese so I can't have a cat right now :( it's really the temperament of the cat, their personality and balance of athleticism, independence yet affection, with rarely any aggression that wins me 100% unfortunately. I haven't seen those levels in any other type of cat

    • one of my piano teachers had a burmese. cheeky as hell; would randomly jump onto my lap mid-lesson, jump up onto the sofa next to my mother (who was scared of cats), or just crouch nearby and stare at her lol.

also to anyone expecting to just stroll in and walk away with a free cat, you will still have to go through the (lengthy & thorough) adoption process. they will grill you about how your home is setup, if your renting etc and wont just hand the cat over :)

To the tune of the excellent 'Cat's in The Cradle':

It ain't pork or chicken, but a fat Siamese,
Yet the food tastes great, so ya don't complain,
But that's not chicken in your chicken chow mein.
Seems to me I ordered sweet and sour pork,
    But Garfield's on my fork,
Did you ever think when you eat Chinese,He's purrin here on my fork…

There's a cat in the kettle at the Peking Moon,
The place that I eat everyday at noon,
They can feed you cat and you'll never know,
Once they wrap it up in dough, boys,
They fry it real crisp in dough.

Chou Lin asked if I wanted more,
As he was dialin up his buddy at the old pet store,
I said not today, I lost my apettite,
There's two cats in my belly and they want to fight,
I was suckin on a Rolaid and a Tums or two,
When I swear I heard it mew, boy,
And that is when I knew…

There's a cat in the kettle at the Peking Moon,
I think I gotta stop eating there at noon,
They say that it's beef or fish or pork,
But it's purrin there on my fork,
There's a hairball on my fork.

    • That's cray
