Hawaii Travel Questions

Hi all, just have a couple of questions regarding a trip to Hawaii.
I'm looking at traveling mid year or just after for 7-8 nights. When would be the best time to travel for price yet still have good weather? August?
I've heard a lot of good reviews regarding the outrigger on the beach and the Moana surf rider but they both seem to be expensive all year around.
I'm going to travel with Hawaiian airlines as they seem to be the best rated airline for that journey.
It would be greatly appreciated for any help what so ever. (Food, drinks, activities, ect)

Thanks!

  • I looked at this recently. It's a year round destination weather wise so crowds will determine the low season. August is IIRC still peak because of the families from the mainland. The other peak is around northern winter. So there are a handful of months between the peak seasons. May and September were what I noted.

    • My girlfriends parents went during October and said it was quite busy.
Was speaking about it tonight and we were thinking may, late August or September. Just can't find any real deals at the moment..

  • it summer in mid year for hawaii/USA. so it's pretty busy/ peak season

I flew Jetstar there in Feb last year and tickets were $425 return.

we stayed at the Ambassador Hotel Waikiki, Honolulu which was about $200 a night. ok place. 3 blocks back from the beach. 10 minute walk/$10 taxi ride from Moana Mall (which is OK). the walmart across the road is a great place place to buy groceries, booze, clothes, souvenirs.

walk up Diamond Head State Monument - easy to get a bus to the base and then half hour walk up.

Manao falls is really nice. about 50 meters back from the falls there is a beautiful track that winds through the mountains for approx 15kms. I only realised it was there when I did the climb so I had no stuff (snacks, extrawater). I walked about 2 kms and saw some very beautiful scenery. including giant boa trees.

    • Thanks for all the feed back. Definitely will be going into a Walmart for alcohol and clothing!
Yeh, we are looking at hikes and day trips aswell, so that information is great.

If you can afford Outrigger you probably won't want to buy clothes from Walmart.

  • Check out Homeaway.com for property rentals. We have had apartments from them twice for a fraction of the cost of a hotel, much more room and parking too if you are lucky. August is a popular time with visitors from the US mainland so can be tricky to find a bargain.

    • had a look at the website, similar to airbnb which also has apartments up to hire out. thanks for the tip!

Activity… Rent a convertible and go for a cruise around the island… Beaches on opposite side of island are much better than Waikiki..

      will look into that thanks!

  • I went in Mar/Apr. The weather was gorgeous but I was travelling for personal reasons. I suspect the larger hotels maintain similar prices all year round.

Definitely go to Diamond Head. It was worth the climb but definitely bring water and snacks.

Pearl Harbour was also worth visiting.

A day trip around the island is also great.

I wished I had the opportunity to visit some of the less touristy islands.

    • september seems to be a reasonable time to go, places are on special…
i looked into pear harbour and would like to visit and alot of people have recommeneded diamond head also. thanks for all the tips!

  • We traveled to Hawaii a couple of years ago in April, couldn't get cheap airfares as we needed to travel during school holidays but managed to have a fantastic holiday while saving money.
We rented a studio apartment rented privately for around A$100 that was only 2 blocks from Waikiki Beach. This gave us cooking facilities and a clothes washer/drier.
Even though we only went for 10 days we purchased a monthly bus pass for unlimited bus rides, including a loop around the island.
We also purchased an Entertainment book so we had vouchers for attractions and food, saving heaps.
If you have some spare time prior to the trip do some research and you will find discount vouchers to print out.

    • some of the deals ive looked at include the entertainment booklet and shuttle buses to various places but will definalty look into the bus idea if something we want to do isnt included in the shuttle. thanks!

    • Sorry to necro your post, but where did you rent the private apartment through? Do you have any links? Thanks

  • Great place for a caffeine detox

    • girlfriend parents told us of a place that does a coffee like here, so will be getting my daily fix from there haha.

    • You mean like the Kona treatment? :)

  • Stayed at outrigger about 6 months ago, not a BAD place, most of the rooms are a bit on the older side. The place is seriously 95% Australian

    • heard its older style but directly on the beach!
who did you fly with and would you recommend them?

  • I went in Novemeber last year, so it would of been there wet season.
Have to say it rained for probably about 8 hours during daylight hours, I was there over a course of 5 days.
The average weather was around the 27 degree mark however was very humid (expected for a tropical island).
I stayed at the Hilton Hawain Village at Waikiki beach, cant remember exactly what I paid but it was a nice little spot.
Highly recomened downloading Uber before you go. We found that on average when travelling for more then 15 minutes an uber can be up to $30 cheaper.
If you like modern history I highly recommened going to see Pearl Harbour (typical tourist destination). I found it very interesting when I was there.
I heard really good things about some of the other Islands but apparently they are a little less friendly to tourists so keep that in mind. That was coming from other tourists and locals while around Honolulu.

  • thinking of going start of september or end of september into october. hopefully it doesnt rain then!
I was going to download uber as my brother went to LA and said its 100% cheaper than cabs anywhere you go.
ill be doing quite abit of site seeing so thank you for that info.
also, who did you fly with and would you recommend them?
