Good Laptop for University <1k

Hi everyone,

My last Uni device (a Surface Pro 2) died a pretty ungodly death on me only a few days after the warranty expired.

I do own an Acer Aspire V3-571G that I keep at home as my main machine as it's too heavy to travel with and needs a cooler attached since the fan stopped working (waiting for a replacement to arrive) and a custom built gaming multimedia desktop for everything else.

My course is a Double Degree in Communication (Creative Writing & Digital Social Media) and International Studies (Japan) so it'll only really be used for typing for long periods of time and some photoshop work.

My main concern is spending too much money on a machine that I won't actually be using to its full potential. Which is why I'm hesitant about the Lenovo products as they have great specs for stuff I won't be using.

Required Specs:

Bigger than a 11" Screen
Battery life over 5 hours
8GB Ram
SSD storage over 100GB
<2.5KG as I'll be carrying it with me
Upgradeable Ram and/or Storage
Comfortable Keyboard
Able to run Photoshop CC

The discounts I've got including the following:

Up to 40% off Selected HP Products [UniDays]
15% off Dell Inspiron, XPS and Alienware Systems [UniDays]
JBHIFI BYOD (Apple, Dell, Lenovo, HP, Surface & Acer)[StudentEdge]
Up to 30% off Selected Lenovo Products [StudentEdge]
10% off BYOD on Shipping Express [StudentEdge]
$20 off on purchases over $100 on Ebay

All help will be very much appricated.

Thanks in advance.

Usually there is a bit of give and take over warranty if you are talking a few days. Maybe see if a Warranty Claim can be made.

    • From what I've been reading, Its very much user fault and is highly likely not to be covered.

I told my sister to put the surface on charge while I was at work, came home a few hours later to find the the brink had melted aganist the screen. Turns out she used the old charger and forgot to tell me. The previous charger had been recalled because of fire risk and I had been using the new one ever since. She admitted to using the old one because it was closer to where she was sitting at the time (which I swear I had thrown out)

I'm waiting back for a response for a microsoft service representive but I'm really not holding my breath XD

      • Didn't they take the old charger from you??

Do you have home contents insurance that may cover it?

        • They didn't actually. At the time I did find it rather strange but never thought much of it. Figured it was probably something to do with trying to get the customer to dispose of it instead, saving costs and such. It was about a year ago when I got the new one and the page has changed since but I did bookmark it when the recall happened: https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-au/support/warranty-ser…

I'll have to check the cover in detail but it should (hopefully). If not then its no real loss, the device was on its last leg anyway. Thankfully I had backed up the data a few days before on a network drive(some recent stuff is gone but its better than nothing)

Its a costly reminder to follow through with disposing eletronics but I'm just really glad no one got hurt.
