Cheapest Health Insurance + Gym Membership

I have the cheapest insurance possible that will allow me to avoid the medicare levy surcharge.

I'd like to join a gym now (let's say it costs $1k a year) and am wondering if a more costly insurance policy might end up saving me money, provided the insurance has some sort of gym subsidy.

That is, I'm looking not necessarily for the cheapest policy, and not necessarily the one with the biggest gym subsidy, but rather the cheapest insurance policy once you take into account the discount I'd be getting on gym membership.

My wife might join the gym too.

  • you should be abl to claim $100 under your fund by going to a Dr who agrees that attending a gym would be of a "healthy or rehabilitation" benefit. Gym usually wont go beyond $100

  • Hi,

I'm guessing you have bought a basic Hospital Cover.

Hif.com.au offers Extras Members (except those with Vital Cover) back an amount (up to $125 Single/$250 Couple per year) via their Extras Cover - Healthy Lifestyle claim (depending on what level of extras cover you select) but it wouldn't make a serious dent in spending $1000 on Gym Membership.
    e.g. HIF+Anytime Fitness http://www.hif.com.au/anytime/default.aspx#Terms

This has a broad overview of things:

  • Most health funds will not pay more than $250 - $350 for gym memberships, so the return you get would not be worth the hike in premiums you will pay, for getting higher insurance cover to cover gym fees.

  • Was hoping for some answers on this thread! Anywho, a mate of mine signed up for life insurance here (https://www.aiavitality.com.au/vmp-au/) for $8/fortnight then got 50% off his virgin active membership. Alternatively you can get 30% off fitness first (plus 20% cashback if you go a certain amount of times) and some sort of similar deal with anytime fitness. I'm still trying to figure out the best solution for me as my gym contract is just about up, but may be worth giving up on trying to save money on your gym membership via health insurance and trying this instead?

    • I am looking for a gym membership and interested in your mate's approach. What is the exact name of the life insurance cover your mate has? Is $8/fortnight the cheapest cover available? Sorry for the questions, I can't seem to find the price list for any of the cover on the AIA Vitality website. Also, does the 50% discount apply to a specific membership plan at Virgin active or can I choose any membership plan?

      • You can search for the terms somewhere.

I looked at Anytime fitness last week as I'm with them and the $8 a week was $416 to save $400, you also have to go to gym a certain amount of times per quarter. Good if you want Life Insurance but read pds etc.

Not sure if Virgin is similar.

      • Hey mate, bit late on this but I just wanted to give you an answer if you didn't already have one.

If you sign up for certain policies with RAC, or RACQ, they give you access to Vitality. I signed up for Life Protect with RAC, and that's 8.38 a fortnight. Got an email 3 days after signing up with a link to activate AIA Vitality, then from there you go in to the site and click a link that puts you through to the page to access the discounted Active membership. Life protect might be more expensive if you're older or have health issues.. but if you're not planning on claiming on it, might be worth just putting in that you're fine for everything.

it's 50% off the flex plan, so the month to month one.

Any other questions let me know :)
