Process for selling car without a roadworthy (QLD)

Hi All,

I think I'm posting this in the right place so here goes:

I'm upgrading my old 2002 Ford Laser and from searching carsales I might be lucky to get $2-$2.5K for it.

I took it to the local mechanic to ask about a roadworthy and they've quoted a min $1K of bits a pieces before it will be cleared for a roadworthy.

Given that's 50% of what I will be lucky to sell it for, I'm considering selling it unregistered, without the roadworthy.

Has anyone done this before? Is it as simple as taking the plates off the car and handing them into QLD transport, then advertising the car as unregistered? What the buyer then does with it is not my concern?

Is there anything else I should be aware of if I do this?

Cheers for any advice!

Apparently it is easier to post a forum on OzBargain than to Google the question. LOL

I'm totally aware of that link and have already read it.

The point of my post was is there anything people know from experience that wasn't covered.

E.g that I could get a refund of the leftover rego was something I didn't know.

  • Keep the plates on the car when you sell it and then what the buyer does with it is not your concern. Make sure you send off that little slip at the bottom saying you have disposed/sold the car and give the seller the sale slip or a receipt of sale.

They may fix it up themselves, part it out, have it as a paddock basher etc. They could do heaps with it but once its in their hands you dont have to worry about it

do not leave the plates on the vehicle, a refund of leftover rego is available.

      • Huh? How can he get a refund of leftover rego if its unregistered? Also if there is any rego on it currently then it would be worth more registered

I assume from this ⬆ that rego is current therefore refund is available.

Still need rwc, $1000+ spend required.

        • @nocure:

Assuming theres about a month left of rego he would only be able to get $30 or so back (as CTP doesnt get refunded - is that the same in QLD?). It would be worth more to take the chance and sell the car registered for an extra $100 or 2. If it doesnt sell then its not a big loss

EDIT: and re: the $1000 for a rwc, it would still allow the new owner to transfer it to wherever they want without having to bugger around with an unregistered vehicle certificate or trailer. It seems more appealing for a car with rego imo

          @k-rokfm:

I don't think you can sell a car in Queensland registered without a safety certificate.

        • @gooddealmate: Correct, it is illegal to do so.

The car is currently registered, so being able to get some of the rego cost back is good to know.

However, from what I understand @gooddealmate is correct, without the roadworthy I can't sell it while still registered.

My thinking is that I hopefully can sell for $1000 (or more) + say $200 rego refund = $1200… or I spend $1000+ getting it fixed, and sell it for $2000 (if I'm lucky) minus $1K repairs and am left with $1000 or less anyway.

Selling unregistered seems like the way to go (and hopefully less hassle)
