EB Games' Zelda Master Edition Debacle

im sure this has happened to a few of you. Doesn't sound like it was deliberate but certainly doesn't help with the EB reputation.

Basically what happened was that a lot of people ordered the "master edition" of the new Zelda, which EB put up on their site for preorder before they had all the info. Then that night they found out that Australia actually wasn't going to be getting that edition, and so they secretly switched all preorders to the new, inferior limited edition WITHOUT immediatly notifying customers. (The limited edition has less merchandise, and potentially an inferior soundtrack). What's more, they made no amendment to the price to account for the removed items. 3 days later they finally emailed customers with a "sorry, same price, less merch."

The situation is much better explained in the post linked below. It also has pictures of the editions / their differences, and the email customers received. But damn. Not a great way to treat your customers. Some people claim they haven't even recieved any kind of email yet at all.

People who still shop at EB games kind of deserve it though. Id prefer to pay more just to not give cash to EB(its even cheaper at JB). The only logical reason to buy there would be if you abuse their return policy to play games for free.

In defence of EB though, they only did it so you could be guaranteed a copy. And i'm sure a refund is pretty easy to get in this case.

Could be worse, could have changed it to the European edition with just the Master Sword figurine and CD.

Also the Nintendo website says the Australian limited edition is meant to have an A3 poster but neither EB Games nor JB Hi-Fi mention it. I think it would be like the Pokemon Sun/Moon collectors edition where the poster is separate and not detailed on the box.
So you don't get a carry case but you may get a poster.

  • This game looks great, but I'm not onboard the hype train. However, wouldn't you have been more annoyed if they just cancelled the orders? Then leaving you at risk of missing out on the 'limited edition' if they listed it and sold out. Waiting 3 days for an email is a bit amateur, but otherwise i'm not sure what else they could have done for you guys.. I'm assuming here you can cancel your pre-order with no grief, otherwise it's definitely an issue.
