Monitor - the 1440 vs 4K question

Hey all,

Posted this in the bargain thread but thought I'd get more responses here. I've got a 6700K and GTX 1070. It's the home PC, so it's general use with a bit of gaming. Would like to upgrade the current 1080 monitor.

Gaming is mostly flight sims like DCS and X-Plane with others like Fallout and Witcher 3.

There is a 28" 4K G-Sync monitor for a decent price here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/287922

Would this monitor go okay with my set-up or is the 4K resolution too much? From what I've read a 1440 G-sync screen would be the sweet spot but they are damn expensive compared to this one.

Thanks.

  • gtx 1080 for 4k.

  • The GTX 1070 is still a very powerful card. With the GTX 1080, you would get slightly better performance (a bit more than slightly) at a huge cost. If you want more frames, then SLI is probably the most cost effective method.

    • No, you will get much better performance with a GTX 1080 vs 1070. The difference is not slight. And SLI may not be cost effective since it's variable how much difference this makes.

  • GTX 1070 will run 4k for most games, but at lower settings than you'd be able to get away with on a 1080. Maybe medium-high settings (depending on game, of course)

  • Depending on the game. If gtx 1080 gives you 60 fps, the 1070 would probably give you 50-52 fps. But the g-sync will make it appear smoother. Have you considered 144hz 1440p?

  • +1

You will be blown away by a higher refresh rate.
The absolute gold standard for monitors is a 34" Ultrawide 144hz w/G-sync.
You can't exactly find any that aren't 1440p

    For a standard monitor, aim for 144hz 1440p + G-sync.

I hate that there are so many Free-sync monitors going on the cheap, but G-sync seems to be almost 50% more in cost.

    • I have a 1060 6gb strix, and get around 90fps on BF1. I have a 3470K.
I have seen the same model 1070 get 144 with drops to about 100 - unnoticable.

Also flight sims - ultrawide curved.

Stop it, your making me drool.

      • 90FPS on what type of monitor?

    • After 90 fps, I haven't been able to notice any difference as hz and fps go up.

    • You can't exactly find any that aren't 1440p

You can find exactly that in the form of 35" 2560x1080 144hz AMVA panels. Despite the low resolution the image quality on these is good enough for Tom's Hardware to state that they have the highest image quality of any monitor as far as gaming goes (terrible desktop resolution though).

  • there's a special one, 3440x1440, which is very good if the size is 28~34 inch

    • Be careful about recognising screen height. For example a 34" ultrawide is the height of a 29" widescreen.

  • I own GTX 1070 and Acer Predator X34 which is a 34" 3440x1440 ultrawide overclockable to 100Hz with G-sync.

I think you're going to have to make way to much of an image quality compromise to use a GTX 1070 at 4K. To achieve 60-100 FPS at 3440x1440 I have to set games like:

GTA V - FXAA on, no MSAA, all Ultra other than grass (high), shadows (high), no advanced settings on.

Fallout 4 - High profile setting (didn't play about with it much due to failing at widescreen, YMMV)

Doom - All highest but not 100FPS at all times.

Dirt Rally - All ultra/highest other than shadows (high).

If you're only using the screen for gaming then 35" 2650x1080 AMVA panels are worth considering. These screens have super high contrast compared to IPS which affords them extraordinary image quality. A GTX 1070 can (more or less) run anything with 8x MSAA at this resolution which makes the resolution much less of a problem - for gaming. The real problem is desktop usage which is usable but obviously ugly plus much less real estate.

You should check AMVA screens in a shop before writing them off. I would have got one if I was only using it for games rather than an x34.

  • Thanks to all who replied. I passed on the 4K monitor. Think I'll save up some more $$$ and wait for a deal on a 1440 100+ Hz G-Sync screen. I'm running 2 x 24" 1080p at the moment so it's not like things are desperate. I just want to make the most of the shiny new GTX 1070 card.

Thanks again and Happy Australia Day!

      Do you know of any?
