WD My Cloud 4TB Personal Cloud Storage

I recently came across this 4TB personal cloud storage device in Harvey Norman's catalog http://www.harveynorman.com.au/wd-my-cloud-4tb-network-hard-… for $287.00

I also found here but it only shows the 2TB one: (https://www.cnet.com/au/products/wd-my-cloud/review/).

I know nothing about cloud storage and even less about this particular piece of hardware.

I did a search and did find this: http://www.trustedreviews.com/wd-my-cloud-review

But I would love to hear from our OZ Bargain's Techy people about it!

Is it worth it? Is it easy to use? Is it safe? Would you recommend it?

  • Is it a normal price? $287 on OW and GG , $285 on MSY

  • If all you want is file storage, then go for it. Synology has changed my life though. Amazing features (and resale value when you want to upgrade).

  • I've had one for over a year. Very easy to use. Just plug and play really. I only use it on my local LAN, I don't use any of the external cloud features.

It has an inbuilt DLNA server so I use it to store all my movies and stream them to the TV and media players around the house. It also has a backup feature where you can duplicate the whole contents of the hard drive to an external USB hard drive.

    • so you can stream movies from it.

What is a DLNA? How is it related to streaming? How do you stream from it?

      Also

can you explain about duplicating a Whole hard drive to an external USB as it relates to using the My Cloud? right now, my understanding is, I can copy my hard drive on my lappy directly from my laptop to a USB which is large enough for said backup; so why would you need/want to use the My Cloud for this?

not questioning you but trying to understand about the My Cloud…

      • DLNA is a basically a streaming protocol that is built into a lot of devices. The MyCloud adds as a streaming server so it makes all the video files you put in certain folders available from a compatible client. My PVR and Sony Bluray both include DLNA clients so I can just choose the network option in those and the MyCloud is automatically found. It then lets me browse to the videos on the MyCloud and play them via the PVR or Bluray.

I basically just use the MyCloud as network attached storage, so instead of plugging in a USB drive to my computers I can copy data from my computers to the MyCloud so I have all my data on a central hard drive accessible from all my other computers. The duplicating thing is called a Safepoint in the MyCloud and it will automatically copy the contents of the MyCloud to an attached USB drive as a backup. If the MyCloud dies it means I will hopefully have a backup of all the data I copied to it so I don't lose everything.
