Ski Advice Required Please - Bus to Thredbo

Hello all,

We are going to Thredbo 20-25 August, 2017. Have flights to Canberra and accommodation at Thredbo booked already.

My question: Should I book the Canberra-Thredbo return bus now????
Greyhound return is $434 for the family (2 adults, 2 children)
Is this cheap?????

I am aware these fares fluctuate in price, and have no idea if I will save booking early or not :-/
It seems rather expensive, but everything seems expensive skiing in peak season at Thredbo…maybe this is cheap..Yes? No?

Any advice would be very much appreciated! :-)

p.s. Have not yet purchased lessons/ski hire/lift pass package…as these are not out yet (advice here also be great)

Cheers all x

Check the Murray's website too - these are the only 2 major bus companies that do bus rides to the snow that I know of.

I'm not sure if they have it on their website yet - but their prices are fixed and don't fluctuate during the year (fixed price for different periods in the season) so will be good to get a comparison on

    Hi there
As the post above noted, there is only 2 bus companies who do the run to Thredbo, so there isn't going to be much of a price war.
Whilst it seems expensive the bus, if you went the car rental route, you'd be looking at at least $80+ min per day, plus petrol plus the NP Pass ($30 or so) per day…and if you are staying in the village itself, you would be paying for the car to look pretty sitting in the car park for the week. :)

My 2 cents, compare the bus timetables, and whatever one is the closest to your arrival time in Canberra, go for that (just give yourself some extra time in case the flight is delayed!)

For rentals etc, again if you are staying in Thredbo itself, I would just go with the Thredbo rentals…they are at Friday flat or the bottom of Crackenback so if you or your kids need binding adjustments etc during your stay you can just ski down, get 'em fixed and be on your way. No need to book early, they won't sell out. Plus if you are needing lessons as well, the package deals for lift/lesson/skis work out cheaper than renting somewhere else and then adding on the lift/lessons.

    Have fun!

  • I'm probably looking too soon! Murray's don't have prices up yet, only Greyhound.

I will be getting the bus for sure, because we are staying in Thredbo Village. No car :-)

I just didn't know if those Greyhound prices were cheap at present as I can't compare, and I've never been before..

Thanks for your advice guys :-)

    • mind me asking how much the accomodation was for?

Greyhound has sales periodically. Sometimes 20% off everything.. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/205945

I would at least wait 5-6 months in case a deal comes up.

    • Thank you for your advice. I will try to hold out.
