  • LOL bought at good guys in the middle of summer for like $70.

    • Any good?

      • +3

        I have one. Works great but it's a bit louder than I'd like when you crank it up to 3 - but not in a rattling way, just the whirring of air.

        On a hot night I'll take the whirring over the heat.

        The reason I picked it was because of the night mode. but if you're not worried about the lights, I prefer my other fan which is an
        Omega Altise 0T600e.

        $83 -

        https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/omega-altise-tower-fan-o…

        • Great stuff. Thanks Pete. You prefer the Omega because it is quieter?

        • +3

          @PSEACT:

          Probably not quieter but a lower sound. The Omega has a thicker tower, so I think the Sunbeam is probably spinning faster whereas the Omega is using a bigger fan.

          But it's also just a bit nicer in terms of design and build.

          Unfortunately they whacked a bit round light show on the front without a dimmer switch.

        • @pete123: hey with the Omega Altise apart from the light show, what's your opinion on its loudness and the usefulness of different settings?

          The reviews I've come across mentioned crappy modes and one said something about eletronic noise (EMI?) even when the fan is off (but plugged in).

        • +1

          @sky blu:

          It has a mode where it switches randomly between high, medium and low to mimic a natural breeze. It's a nice theory but you hear the motor getting louder and softer so it sort of kills the effect for me. It's not an issue though, I just don't use it.

          Other than that it has the high, medium low settings that they all have, it oscillates and it has a timer (hourly compared to the Sumbeam which is 1,2,4 or 8 hours). It has a translucent flip lid on the top where all the buttons and the remote sit.

          It's not quiet but I don't think it's loud for a fan.

          I just measured the sound on my phone (maximum setting and 10cm away). The Omega came in at 83dB and the Sunbeam was 89dB.

          I've never heard any noises when it's off.

        • @pete123: Thanks. How obtrusive are the lights would you say, that could potentially affect buying decision? I am in between the Omega and the Sunbeam.

        • +2

          @sky blu:

          It's only an issue if you want to sleep with it on in a dark room. It's probably similar to having a small digital alarm clock by your bed.

          It's a round display of about 5cm diameter. It has a temperature number on it, with various icons around the edges to tell you what mode it's on and an animated fan symbol.

        • @pete123: Do the lights flash, continuously or intermittently?

        • +1

          @sky blu:

          They don't flash. They are just on.

    Alternatively you could buy one of these for the next 7 years and throw it away at the end of every summer for the same price! - http://www.kmart.com.au/product/pedestal-fan---40cm,-white/9…

    Even comes with a night mode! (because it doesn't have any illuminated panels that have the potential to ruin precious sleep).

    Even comes with that kmart feeling where you know you totally didnt overspend and its okay to throw it off your balcony if you get mad.

      I'm done with those disposal pedestal fans. They fall apart within weeks eg Motor gets loose and it affects the airflow, base gets wobbly and it starts making noises. I would rather just spend extra to get something that lasts.

      • Whilst I totally agree with you on this, I find that I dont have issues with fans. I'd apply this strategy for something like pots/pans.. I'd buy mega expensive good-ass stuff.

        I'm a go hard or cheap the shit out kinda guy, none of this in between bullshiz.

        EDIT: I thought of a better example.. Vaccum cleaner.. I've got a dyson.. wouldn't have it any other way.. Never had good experiences with cheap ones..

        • Paying top dollar for something doesn't mean it's the best. Dyson isn't the only good vacuum brand out there.

          Btw rambutan is pretty expensive in Australia.

        • -1

          @sky blu:

          Definatelty not, most of the time you sure as hell dont get the best. You get the marketing/image (example, the iPhone…).

          I'm sure they aren't but from the standpoint of 'go hard or cheap the hell out' I could only really see getting a dyson as the going hard option (as I'd always cheaped out). Probably a lot to do with marketing but it sure as hell is one of the best vaccums you can get.

          This one time I stayed at the sofitel in Melbourne, realised I was living the peasant life with my pillows at home, went out and spent about $160 a pillow on Australian made duck down plushest thing ever. No regrets. I did once buy a Sheridan 1200tc fitted sheet and could barely tell the difference between it and my el-cheapo $30 1000tc sheets, lesson was learnt that day.

          Yeah rambutans are expensive. I do however prefer lychees, I feel like they have more flavour and they're less of a pain to peel.. And cheaper generally..

        • @rambutann: Well I guess it is getting kinda late

    • Stand back - i have expertise here.

      The KMart fan is crap, but Aldi sell some pretty good ones now and again for circa $40.

      I bought an Aldi tower fan in Dec, but only as everyone else seemed to be going for it, but it didn't really work for me as it's set lower than the bed, is noisy, and lights up like a Christmas tree. Damned thing kept me awake, so i took it back.

      Got a small place and it's overheating? This is how you deal with it: build a wooden frame and attached a standard exhaust fan using cable ties, then attach it to a small window using velcro or something and pump air OUT. You'll need a window open elsewhere to let fresh air IN. Then have a second fan inside to circulate the new air coming in so there's a slight breeze over your bed - no, not pointing straight at you, but near you. Set it high if you can.

      When the fan burns out, just swap another one in using cable ties.

      I'd never get to sleep without that kind of setup.

      No need to thank me.

  • I've actually been looking for something like this.

    I was hoping to get the Dyson fan, but it is too expensive.

    • I got this instead of a Dyson…
      Goldair GAS10 Tower Fan

      4 fan speeds. Speed 1 is fine for night.
      Speed 4 is pretty powerful.

      The lights on the display automatically dim after a while.
      Comes with negative ions and a little IR controller.

      • This looks so nice! I didn't know it existed. Sounds like you're happy with it?

        • +1

          Yeah, I'm pretty happy with it.
          I got it for my bedroom for hot nights. I think an additional fan speed that is half as powerful as speed 1 would be nice though.

        • @0xFFFF:

          Thank you so much for taking the time to reply!

    • +2

      The Dyson fan is rubbish (I do have one). DO NOT BUY IT.

      • Why is it rubbish?

        • +3

          Just search on here for threads about it and you'll find many people covering it - noisy, way overpriced, does nothing or less than far cheaper fans. I have their cordless vacs and they're great - the fans are a different standard.

        • +1

          @wfdTamar:
          Good to know. Thanks.
          The only Dyson thing I have is a vacuum and it really sucks… in a good way.

        • @wfdTamar:

          Thanks for the feedback. I have a V6 Vacuum - I love it. That's why I thought it may be worth spending on the fan.

        • @khonfahm: That was my thinking too. I was really disappointed that what turned up was so bad. One of the worst internet purchases I've made in 20 years of internet shopping.

      • Out of curiosity which model do you have? I ask because yes, the latest ones are the most expensive but they have improved a lot since the 1st gen models which I agreed were super loud and did not feel as refreshing as they should of.

  • +1

    Night mode hey? Does this turn the fan off when you're sleeping to prevent fan death if you don't have a window open?

    • Just turns lights off. Does have a timer for 1,2,4,8 hrs that is easy to set.

  • +2

    $77.70 pickup at Stan Cash if you are in Melbourne.

    Otherwise $79.01 - $84.94 posted at Billy Guyatts for most metro NSW/VIC/QLD/SA locations.

  • What I want for night mode - no lights, a quiet waft at lowest setting.

    • +1

      I don't have any lights.
      Do the occasional wafting but the setting isn't adjustable.

  • I paid for this last night, all OK. Went in to pick up from Bondi Junction store today and was rudely informed that there is no stock in NSW. Got a refund, just a waste of time though.

    • You can get it from Billy Guyatts for cheaper and with postage most probably in NSW to save another trip.

      • +1

        Thanks hamza I did exactly as you suggested and yes it was slightly cheap with delivery. Thanks man.
