Taking a Power Bank Overseas on Carry On

Hi all,

Travelling to Vietnam in 2 days. First ever international flight. Flying solo. Super nervous!

I plan to take 2 power banks with me and keep them in my laptop bag. 1 Xiami 10,400 MaH and the other is a 10,000MaH I picked up from JB Hi Fi once upon a time. Will I have any trouble carrying these on? I'll be catching 3 domestic flights within Vietnam too. Most are Jetstar, Scoot or China Southern.

Thanks

  • Pretty sure each airline lists what you can bring on or not when you book the ticket…and it's also on the ticket… Did you not read it?

There are about 6 or 7 different tickets. I haven't had a chance to review them all yet. In the process of that tonight!
      Thanks

It's important to read the fine print, especially if you are travelling overseas by yourself. You may not always have time/net access to ask OZB. :)

  • Shouldn't be an issue.

However you'd better check the websites for all airlines you plan to use and all airports you are departing, arriving or transiting through.

    From SingaporeAir:

Rechargeable battery packs, e.g. power banks, are treated as spare lithium batteries. The carriage of these items are subject to local regulations.

    • I wouldn't imagine it to be an issue - It's a battery…by its very prupose, designed to be used for when travelling!

  • AFAIK you must not have power banks in checked luggage. So whatever power banks you have have to be on your person or with your carry on luggage.

      I don't have chekced luggage anyway! :)

Just make sure the specs of power is listed clearly on the power bank.

Had to get a clearance document from QANTAS when travelling with my 30,000 mAh.
Most of them look at the Watt Hour but make sure you check on the airlines website and acquire the necessary documents if needed

Yeah 30,000 mah the size itself will be suspicious enough.

    • Thanks!

  • shouldnt be a drama

  • It's fine the size you have. They will check it but is fine

  • i carried 2 romoss 2000mAh in hand carry bag. no issues. they had more of an issue with the cans of corn beef i had there too. well not really an issue when they saw what it was.

For travelling overseas, i always carry a USB extension cable. Something similar to this (https://www.4cabling.com.au/5m-usb-2-0-am-af-cable.html)

I was sitting at HCM airport recently with no available spare power points in sight. Saw a TV and plugged my iphone cable and USB extension cable in. (my standard iphone cable is relatively short)

Got a few looks for being connected to the TV but hey; got a reasonable charge so i was happy.

  • Have fun on your trip. That's a lot of internal flights. Next time, consider taking the train!!! It's fun!,

Visit the man in seat 61 website. It will tell you everything to expect.

  • Table 2.3A - all major airlines follow this, though occasionally it might be varied slightly.

Your batteries are less than 100Wh so they're classified under 'Batteries, spare/loose, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries' which means they are permitted in carry on but not checked baggage, and there's no limit to how many you can carry.

  • It shouldn't be an issue as long as it's not in checked in baggage
