How many of you here are into the hobby of collecting Die-Cast Models?

People take up a number of things as a hobby. Similarly, i have taken up the hobby of collecting die-cast models of bikes and cars specifically.

Any one here who does it, or had done it in some span of life in time.

Share your collections, stories and how it all started.

  • my horror story of buying a die cast model transformers. it was in mint condition unopened box. gave it to a friend who i told it was a collectible. all of which flew past his head becaude later on his kid was playing with it. so the paint was all chipped.

      • +1

this is why some people cant have nice things even if it was given to them.

But it is a toy, it is meant to be played with.

        • @Euphemistic: huge difference in just a toy and a collectible. If all you wanted was to play with it then just buy a cheap plastic car. Not a die cast metal car which appreciates in value if kept in great condition.

        • @xoom: a 'collectible' is still a toy, just with a silly price tag. Lots of people think it is silly to buy something and leave it in a box.

If it looks like a toy a kid is going to want to play with it.

        • @Euphemistic: my friend has a set of die cast metal macross/robotech. It was made in the 1980s. From the original factory that is no longer around so the original molds are gone.

So the 'toy' he has now has serious value as a collectible.

But hey its just a toy right. Im no avid toy collector but i can see value in certain items.

My friend said he will pass this collection on to his kids. Obviously when they sees the value in it beyond seeing it as a toy to play with.

Its like finding the original episode 1 of superman comic and letting your kids at it with their grubby little mits. But hey. Its just a comic book right?

        • @xoom: well, it was 'just a comic book' until people decided that it somehow held more value as a collectible.

        • @Euphemistic: the value is in the fact that there are very few of them around if you could ever get them at all.

Obviously one in mint condition versus one that has been used and abused (not looked after) will be worth more to a collector.

Clearly we will never see eye to eye when it comes to the value of a collectible. Seeing all you see is parts cost to make.

The value is in the limit of said item and condition.

Again im no avid collector but i understand the passion and value in it.

Its no different to you saying a Picasso is just a painting and should not be worth what it goes for these days. But you can see how limited it is and there are very few that go on sale if ever.

        • @xoom: You haven't seen Toy Story have you?

        • @xoom:

I received VF-1S when I was a kid. Best toy I have ever received.
If I have one now, brand shinny new. in a box. I will find it hard to resist taking it out of the box to play with.

If it came with the GBP armour set…all deal is off. I'm playing with it

  • I did collect 1:43 Matchbox and Trax models. Got 25-30? That was back when you were posted a paper catalogue to flick through. When you don't buy one for a while the catalogues stop coming. I recently signed up for Trax email newsletter.

I still have all my small Matchbox etc from when I was a child, not that they are worth anything except sentimental value.

  • hmmm. Sports and outdoors section? Unless you are collecting them from the neighbours kid's sandpit…..

  • Yeah ive got about 10 or so Classic Carlectables and Biante 1:18s that ive collected over the years. I havent bought one in a little while but my favorite one is the Holden Coupe 60 that ive got. I would love to have had the Efijy but its just so far out of my price range lol

  • Have a couple of collections now unfortunately.

It started with art books because of my interest in art. Recently I've been running out of shelf space so I have to be more selective about the books I buy

Then I moved to star wars collectibles (Because who doesn't like star wars, and there's just so much stuff for it), especially the original 1979-83 action figures. I did also manage to snag some slightly more recent but still equally nice pieces.

And finally, partially thanks to a coworker and partially thanks to @Watchnerd, I now have a growing collection of watches both new and vintage.

  • i have six ancient egyptian cow bells

    • a friend has a cabinet full of die cast metal airlines branded planes. they look good as a collection.
