Melbourne to Frankfurt (Germany) - $1077 to $1125 (Apr - Jul 2017) Via Air India

40

Long time lurker - first time posting. Feel free to rip it apart (about time I learnt how to post).

Was searching for flights to Europe and stumbled upon some great deals by AirIndia (includes 30 kg baggage). One stop in New Delhi.

Here's a link to Momondo -

You also get the same prices on AirIndia website - it is very complicated and slow though.

Sample dates -

4 June - 20 June 2017 - AUD 1077
14 June - 27 June 2017 - AUD 1077

1 July - 13 July 2017 - AUD 1087
12 July - 27 July 2017 - AUD 1087

7 July - 28 July 2017 - AUD 1124

I guess the downside is a 20 hours layover at Delhi airport. There's visa on arrival for Australians (please correct me if I am wrong) and some pretty cheap hotels if you want a bit of snooze time on the go. Of course you can swelter in the hot Indian summer for a few hours too.

dodgy airlines ? I leave it upto you to judge - I travelled with them once and it was way more comfortable than AirChina or China Southern or Vietnam air. Yes, I travel a lot with these 'low budget' carriers.

  • Maybe carrier in the title?

    • Thanks mate - I think someone (moderator?) fixed that.

VOMIT. Layover + the worst airline flying into Australia. And I know all the Chinese ones…

Fair enough the layover is quite long but it saved me approx $500, so I can live with it - next best was KLM or cathay around $1700 (and this was a few weeks ago).

My experience with them wasn't that bad - have you flown with them ? what was particularly bad for you ? I have already booked, so trying to be prepared mentally :)

      • I work at the airport and the stories of what happens on that plane is atrocious.

    • Agreed! We made it out of Australia, from Melbourne via Sydney - 3 hour layover, not allowed to use the bathroom either.
Into New Delhi a couple of hours late, due to passengers in Sydney arriving late/airline waiting for them.

Flight home = Cancelled. So had to make arrangements with China Southern to fly home via Ghangzhou.

Took 4 months to get a refund on the tickets. Only positives were they were using a 787 to fly over.

      As long as you expect:
      - The average to poor food
      - The layovers
      - The possibility of cancellations
      - The delays

Then you should be fine! If it was up to me, I'd take the extra 500 and spend it on a shorter flight via Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore or Abu Dhabi.

  • They fly B787 for both routes

That means jack-diddly when they are still squeezing in a 333 config, and there's only 18 non-economy seats on the whole plane (therefore worse passenger/space/facilities & staff/passenger ratios). No thanks.

  • My experience with Air India has always been pleasant. Their food is always good and the plane being a Dreamliner is great.

Some of my bad experiences have been with Singapore airlines. They fed my special meal to someone else by mistake and had nothing except one apple to feed me.

Virgin flying from LA to Melbourne was worse. They did not know what nUtfree food is. So we couldn't eat it.

Qantas was the worst for service. I nearly died of dehydration waiting for them to get me a bottle of water.

  • Is Indian Airways on par with Air Koryo of North Korea DPRK?
