Best Phone Less than $500 (URGENTLY)

Hello,

So I'm looking for a phone for my friend whose phone is getting to the point where it's not going to work anymore. She's looking for a phone that will do the job and quickly and a front facing speaker, also a good camera.

However it can't be from an online store or overseas. Your help towards this is very much appreciated

Thank you

  • LG G5, oppo r9, Huawei p9. These are around $500…

    • Prices on local P9's have only reached as low as $580 - which is more "around $600" than 500.

Galaxy S5 is now under $400 - not bad for an ex-flagship that's waterproof

As the above posted said, S5. Jbhifi is selling the 16gb model at around $370 from memory, check their site to be sure.

IMO, no need to spend much more than that. S5 has a great screen and all the performance necessary for a phone, Spending more than 400-500 on a phone in absurd, in my opinion.

I have the S5. It's… not that good imo. Fingerprint scanner is inaccurate, poorly positioned. It won't get any updates past Marshmallow either. The Xiaomi Mi5 hardware-wise is much more cost effective although it has no warranty locally.

The Moto G4 Plus is what I'd pick. Great camera, no bloat, has all the neccessary features for average user. P9 is also a solid choice.

I can second the Oppo R9 suggestion or the Moto G4 Plus if they're looking at something a bit cheaper.

  • I just bought my wife an S5 and a Moto G4 Plus for me.

She likes her S5, and I LOVE my G4 Plus.

Both have great cameras, plenty of RAM, bugger-all bloat, and are fast.

The fingerprint scanner in the Moto is much better than the S5.

Edit: Forgot to add that I could not use the S5, as I have work and personal SIMs, and the S5 has only one slot.

  • I've got the Mi5. Picked it up for $320 (including DHL postage). Really happy with it. Had it for a couple weeks now, running smooth. Fingerprint can be off, especially with my right thumb (probably because i didn't scan it very well) but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone on a budget. Thought about the Moto G4, but the fingerprint scanner looks like a massive waste of space and 2GB RAM doesn't seem to cut it anymore. But those are just my thoughts.

  • How about HTC One X9, which comes with front facing speakers and 13MP Main Camera with Optical Image Stabilization?

    It's available at JB Hi-Fi.
