Need Help Deciding Which Laptop from JB Hi-Fi

Hi OzB.

I'm replacing a family members laptop that was stolen. He uses Excel a lot with complex formulas so he wants it to be relatively quick. I thought all these should suffice but ya'll may notice something I don't. The last Dell entry looks very highly spec'd but I had concerns around battery life. He's happy for it to be a 2-1 and not a bulky notebook. It needs to be replaced from JB Hifi as I'm going through insurance.

I've had a look at the following:

  • Dell Inspiron 13-5000 - Z510842AU - Here
  • Dell Inspiron 13-7000 - Z510461AU - Here
  • Dell Inspiron 13-7000 - Z510872AU - Here
  • Lenovo Yoga 710 - 80V4001TAU - Here
  • Lenovo Yoga 910 - 80VF005CAU - Here

What are you thoughts?

Have a play in store and see which one he likes. Also have a look at the XPS13, it's a much better quality laptop.

You can get a new in box XPS 13 from the Dell outlet for less than those inspirons, e.g.

    DFO-4003491XL AS NEW
    XPS 13 Laptop 7th Generation
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7200U (3MB Cache, up to 3.1 GHz)
    8GB LPDDR3 1866MHz
    256GB M.2 PCIe SSD
    Windows 10 Home-HE (64bit) English
    No Optical Drive
    Killer 1535 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1 Intel(R) HD Graphics
    English Backlit Keyboard
    60WHr Integrated Battery
    45 Watt AC Adapter
    13.3 inch FHD AG (1920 x 1080) InfinityEdge display,
    1 Year Warranty
    $ 1,499

    A couple points:

    • No need to buy Dell on JB Hi Fi, buy straight from the website. Or even better, buy Dell refurb.
    • No need to buy very high end with i7 processors just for excel. Even the most complex Excel formula runs like butter on mid range processors. Save your money.
    • If you don't carry them around and just put them on a desk 90% of the time, no point getting smaller screen.
    • If you want to carry them around, get the Yoga.
  • Thanks for comments guys. Unfortunately I don't have a choice where I can go as I'm dealing with insurance. If that weren't the case I'd be hanging around for a TA deal on the T460s!

    • What's the value you are limited to?

      • I've got a bigger total to spend but I need to replace other electronics that were stolen so looking to spend about 1500 for the laptop but he may consider something abit higher if we can justify it.

        • I take it the insurance company wants the laptop to be bought from a very specific retailer?

        • @scrimshaw:

Correct and that's JB. They've matched what was stolen to their equivalent which has given us a total for all goods but we can buy what we want.

If you're limited to the range at JB, probably this one then, has a 512GB SSD and is the same price as the 256Gb version. I like the 7000 13 inch inspirons. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/dell/del…

I don't think the 910 is worth the price premium.

        • @neo-X:

Also make sure you buy all your gear from JB at once to get as much off each item as possible :)

        • @iforgotmysocks:

Thanks! Yes that's right, we're building a list of the stuff to get from there as they come out cheaper via JB insurance claims :)
