Side Income Ideas

Hi all,

I wonder if you can help me find a suitable job to earn side income.

Due to unfortunate event, my wife has been unable to continue working and hence we are struggling to pay the bills.

I am almost 40 years old and has been an office man all my life. I have no special skill that I know of, no musical instrument skill, no sport, no cooking skill.

I need to get at least $200 a week, only can do it in the weekend or weeknights. This is tye minimum… Ideally more than $400 a week.

Window cleaning, low start up cost and easy to learn.

It's a bit silly, but I am a bit embarrassed to offer cleaning services to my neighbours.

How should I ask? What should I say?
      How much should I ask?

      • If your not comfortable asking them you could always hit up businesses, but be prepared to have to give out tax invoices or be alot cheaper.

        • +2

Not so straight forward with businesses, they'll want to make sure you have workers comp, liability insurance, etc.

"Services" totally the way to go - anything time poor people will pay you to do for them - our office has a guy who comes and details cars from $15 for a basic wash to $45 for a full in and out cleainng service
    Lawn Mowing
    Gardening / Rubbish Runs
Guy with a ute style deliveries and pick ups
    House Cleaning
    clearing gutters
    House and Pet sitting

    Uber?

    • Where do i look for that kind of jobs?

      Thanks

      • I think you work for yourself man!

I've heard people can do alright walking dogs. I suspect this would be highly dependent on where you live.

It would probably only work well in a wealthy areas.

        • U may be able to find some on airtasker.com Irregular work though - and u have to compete with other people to win the job.

  • Drive a bus on weekends, mow lawns, sell stuff on eBay/gumtree.

    Got kids?

    • Yes I have kids.

We don't hoard much stuff, we don't have many to sell.

I have never driven a bus before, and don't have bus driving license.

      • You may want to look into bus drivers. The pay in SA surprised me. A lot.

        • Ok I will, thanks!

Not to seem rude, but is your capable of perhaps babysitting?

    • Well I don't think I do a great job at it… Maybe with older kids I can.

You have an investment property, so you can't be doing too badly. This also tells me that you're somewhat savvy, so I am sure if you put your mind to any of the suggestions provided here you will be fine.

    • Yes I do, you research well :)

Long time ago money was easier…
However we have taken a big hit lately from here and there.

I really don't want to sell investment property, as it costs more to buy again. This would be a last resort.

My problem is that I don't have skills n never done any other kind of job than computer work.

  • Services if you wanna avoid tax invoices and such. Investment or online shop otherwise is another alternative. Another one is sign up for paid surveys. They're not too bad for little extra cash. You can transfer it to PayPal and pay for the fees for the online shops.

  • Don't underestimate yourself - you may have skills that you use in the office everyday that you think aren't special, but in fact, are.

I was thinking night shift at the supermarkets packing shelves. It's minimal responsibility and pays decent. It might take a toll on your concentration levels in your 9-5 job though.

If you're reasonably fit, you could probably do a removalist job as well.

One thing to consider is your marginal tax rate. That'll have an impact on any second job you decide to take (if it's a job that pays tax), but having an investment property might mean you can work your way around it.

Also, don't forget you might now be eligible for family tax benefits. If you are eligible or eligible for more, any additional money could lose over 60% if it takes away you ftb and gets taxed. Look at your income, you may be elible for immediate fornightly payments.

Actually, what I meant to ask is if your wife is capable of babysitting. I assume not, but that's one thing she might be able to do from home.

    • I agree. Take a second look at what you do in the office and how it might be valuable to others. Either privately or to small businesses.

I have a friend who worked in business/admin and payroll. She got an ABN and did data entry and payroll stuff in the evenings for small businesses.

If you have skills in IT this could be sold.

Not easy to get though. I checked at some Woollies and Coles here in Sydney when I didn't have a job and the managers mentioned that they already had many people in queue for such positions.

    Good luck.

    What is your income?

I would start looking at how you manage finances at home and more into a tighter budget.
Large majority of people pay too much for telecommunication, entertainment, etc

It is evil and anti Australian to be asking for help to break the law and support Tax avoidance.

This was originally posted on Australia Day to add insult to injury.

Sorry to read of your wife's misfortune in circumstance, and it is wonderful you want to take up the slack.

But to hurt every other tax paying/working - or not family in the country is wrong. Go to Centrelink and see what you can do legally for your entitled assistance, remember what you paid tax for as well. They offer fiscal advise as well, your budget may need help.
The legal dramas if something did go wrong……… fiscal and health wise….you could be so much worse off too.
Maybe I am just uneducated in defrauding the Government, but I am too scared of $$ X 7 penalty plus more plus costs.

My wife quit work the day she fell pregnant 22 yrs ago(grrrr), but I did not cheat the country. I worked the extra, did the extra, and paid tax all the way through( I am still suffering and paying with only one income so I do understand going without).

Now I am not trying to tell you how to live or not to spend, but you did say you were money issue bound….so I ask the question while I truly am just trying to be being logical and understanding and sensitive of your situation. I am not well off, but I am - 1st time in a long while, fiscally just ok, and not in debt. I am talking to you from experience.

You recently stated your strata units cleaning fee is too high and they do a poor job….maybe you can take over this duty and get paid the $3500. Then perhaps do other unit complexes?

Have you found a new tenant for your investment property? Are you managing it or have an agent…fees?
Try for holiday let during the wait for permanent tenants perhaps and do your own management.

Put you stocks and investment on hold temporarily until you budget is back on track, unless you are making a motza of course.

You recently asked this here…."I'm considering to move from Samsung to iPhone". My Kogan phone is under $200, a store you visit online I see, will void you of the need for an expensive iphone. So, where else can you save money?

My conscience is clear to say you and Ozbargainers should understand that if every Taxpayer paid their full and correct share, we would all be paying much less than we do now. Now if the big corporations were held accountable more-so……

Great that you ask for help finding work. Shame you want back door cash in hand.

      You forgot a tldr

      • TL:dr

Poor form to cheat on your taxes, against fellow tax paying Australians, on Australia Day.
Look at cutting budget eg don't buy iPhone.
Put your stocks and investments on hold for the moment.
Look at jobs relating to your investment property eg cleaning strata block, property management.

        • Its a n absolutely fair point, as a matter of fact I used to be just as outraged as you are to those non tax paying people.

The Samsung to iPhone was a very very long time ago, I couldn't remember actually. I'm staying with Samsung.

The cleaning fee actually is far less than I thought it was, less than $30 a week.

It was perhaps poor decision when we choose to buy investment property and max out our loan. It was that decision that led us to this moment. We have done what is reasonable to do, ask the bank to pay interest only, but there is a time limit.

I need a sustainable way for at least a year to save money and increase my earnings. If not surely I have to default one of my mortgage. And this is not a very bad thing, but it makes us losses a lot of money from that investment.

There are also quick and dirty ways, like swapping to cheaper cars, phone, and other stuff. But that profit only last for how long before we come to this conundrum again.

Tax receipts are not the problem if you want to talk about our current fiscal situation. Its our massive Welfare payments bill.

  • If you don't need your car that often rent it out through car next door
    https://www.carnextdoor.com.au/

    • I do need my car every day unfortunately.

The only time it is not needed is when we are asleep.

Car next door is good though, I use them before.

Get a motor bike and join your local motorcycle club. Should then be able to pick up a lot of work here on ozbargain.

    • I'm not sure how to get a job with motorbike? Also never ridden one before, and haven't found out where to learn and obtain license.

      • +1

First you get a bike, then you sign over your house, wife and future for a patch on a jacket - easy.

  • You could become a flipper, take time and effort and investment, like every other way to make money. Pay Caesar what Caesar is due, but ONLY what he is due - instead of looking for how to dodge the tax system, look for subsidies, deductions, offsets, etc.

If you have a spare bedroom or two, try Airbnb. I live in the north west suburbs of Melbourne and am surprised at how many guests I get (had almost 30 in 18 months). At about $45 a night, it's not hard to get a bit of income on the side without too much hard work.

    • Is $45 a night worth the time and effort to clean the room, change the sheets etc? Or is that $45 per person?

      • they take the sheets etc off, and place it the washing machine. it get's cleaned once a week at least anyway so there's no massive difference to me usually. And if a guest is bringing me nearly $300 for a week, I'm not complaining too much :)

    My bee hives are pretty good side income (and keep kids busy);

I used to sell stuff at small local markets, mainly buying and selling books.

My dad buys nice old furniture from deceased estates,St Vinnies to repair broken drawers, replace hinges, cracked glass, French polish and sell to antique shops or even ebay for pretty nice profit.

All this stuff is unpredictable and hard to rely on and you have to do your trial and error first but once you learn the ropes there are big windfalls.

…Other than that collect all the free pet rabbits on gumtree and sell rabbit meat.
