NSW Greenslip - Are "L" Platers Considered "Drivers under 25"?

I'm just renewing my NSW Rego, and my greenslip renewal has a "Any under 25 year old drivers" question. We now have an L Plater driving our car, and prior to that I notified the Comprehensive insurance and there was no premium change while they are only an L-Plater. I didn't even think of changing the Greenslip at the time.

At www.greenslips.nsw.gov.au nominating an under 25 driver increases the premium by about $200, which is fine if that's the same with all insurers.

I'm interested to hear what others have done in this situation?

  • It was my understanding that learner drivers are generally covered on the insurance policy so long as a fully licensed driver is in the car as the instructing passenger.

Once the learner becomes a provisional driver (assuming they are under 25), you'll see the increase in your premiums.

I would speak to your individual insurer/read the PDS to confirm this.

    • Thanks, I queried QBE however they have not replied yet. I'd like to hear from others who might have had the discussion with their insurer.

  • For CTP Greenslips you are required to declare them if you know they'll be driving the car any time during the term of the insurance.

If the under 25 person doesn't get into an accident that causes personal injury then there isn't any consequence. If they do then the insurance may be void if you haven't declared them.

Call a couple of CTP insurers if you want to discuss it. You should be able to ask the questions anonymously.

    • I doubt a CTP could be considered void, that's the whole point of it being compulsory?

  • +1

whilst this person is an L plater, there will be no changes to your insurance policy or premiums. However when they get a provisional licence, all insurance policies will need to be updated to include the under 25 years old driver.
This is so, as whilst you're an L plater, you are really driving under the licence of the supervising driver.

  • Not sure about your actual question, but the greenslip system is a bit of an odd one. I wouldn't advise them of a change in your circumstances, ie a new driver, unless renewing the policy (don't ever lie with a new policy). It would be just the same as a p plater purchasing a car from a retiree (not pensioner).

The green slip is already paid with the rego and AFAIK it is the same until next rego time. I've never had to change any green slip details on a purchased car until renewal time.
