Best mobile phone carrier: Vodafone, Optus or Telstra?

Which mobile company is best (if comparing the same plans) when it comes to coverage, offers, and costs? Living in south eastern suburbs of Melbourne if that helps.

Any cons that you've experienced with the said companies? MY plan with Vodafone will expire soon and I'm open to switching carriers. Planning on either getting a new phone plan or a BYO plan.

Thanks for your help.

The biggest factor is the coverage in your local area that you will be using it in most. I'm not sure who covers those suburbs of Melbourne the best but generally Telstra will have the best coverage esp for rural but you have to pay a premium price.
Optus prices are sky high too.
Virgin has the same coverage as Optus and offers a range of great planes esp with phones.
Vodafone has cheap plans, coverage really depends on the area though.
There's a few other companies that run off the 3 networks like jenee mobile and vaya and kogan mobile and aldi mobile, might want to look into them too.

Aldi. Telstra stuff, $25 for unlimited calls, texts and bit of data. More you spend, bigger the data.

    Telstra = Best Product
Optus 4G MVNO = Best Value
Vodafone 3G MVNO = Lowest Price

Really depends on your location and needs.
Plans aren't worth it these days, not unless you need it for your business.

  • Best coverage and cost does not come together.
Buying what you need would help you save money rather than the best value plans.

After having been with all 3 providers I can easily say that Telstra is the best, optus is second best only because of slightly less reliable internet, slightly worse coverage. Vodafone has fairly unreliable internet, but the second you leave a metro area you're screwed. Having just ridden my motorcycle from Melbourne to Perth I discovered just how crap they are when I didn't have reception from Port Augusta to Norseman.. 2000km.. And even when I got it again it was on 'roaming' so I didn't even get internet. Telstra had reception the whole way across. I will be porting out of Vodafone once my 12 month kogan prepaid thing ends.

Edit: never actually go with one of the carriers.. Go with an outsourced company as its much cheaper. Like vaya or telechoice etc.

It depends on what you mean by best. The answer for a city dweller who uses data heavily and hardly ever makes calls will be different from a person who travels a lot, calling often. Obviously each carrier has market share for reasons. You need a requirement list instead of relying on a poll. Then you can say what is best for you.

    • I live in a South Eastern suburb of Victoria and rely more on data. I use the calls and text as well, but not heavily. I don't travel a lot.

  • For me optus is best. And telstra is pretty bad.
