FIFO from Perth to Wellington, NZ

My partner works FIFO and we're planning to move to Wellington, NZ. He will be flying from Perth to Wellington and back every three weeks. Just wondering if anyone does the same thing and which airline they fly with/club membership. Am trying to weigh up which club to sign up with (Koru, Qantas or Virgin).

Also, if you have some tips on how to get cheaper flights for regular international flights then please share (unfortunately, we don't know anyone who works for the airlines so this isn't an option).

Thanks in advance :)

  • Probably Qantas would be best. He should check his work if they have corporate Qantas Club memberships to get lounge access (eg shower) as they are cheaper than RRP ones. If he has to pay for can claim on tax as a work expense.

For cheaper flights have to use iwantthatflight or similar and just have alerts for cheap fares. I suspect you won't have much flexibility on dates given the time table so some flights are going to be expensive (eg school holidays).

    • Thank you for your recommendation. Going to go with Qantas like you suggested. Thanks again :)

  • What airline to go with would depend on where you'd like to transfer and what global alliance you want access to. I reckon Air NZ would be the best, giving access to the 787 flying from Auckland to Perth. You also have the option to go via MEL/SYD/BNE with Virgin. You can buy Koru Membership, but your husband should be flying enough to earn status with Air NZ. Alternatively if you join Virgin your husband would potentially fly enough to earn you a complimentary membership.

    • Hey, thanks for your advice and recommendations. I really appreciate. ATM we've decided to fly him with Qantas as they have the latest flights out of Perth. This would benefit us in case of cancellation/delays. And then we'll just wait for Gold status instead of purchasing membership. Cheers again.
