Who Is Cheapest for Basics by Type? Coles/Woolworths/ALDI

Who has the cheapest everyday price for the budget friendly basics? Below I have a very basic grocery list that can be used to make many different meals on the cheap, didn't include fruit and veg because it changes too regularly to track. I don't care for brand names or quality in this thread but looking for the cheapest of the cheap of each cateogory, for the ultimate shoe-string budget, for the aussie battler! When doing the supermarket crawl where should we go for each of the following ie. who has the cheapest eggs?…

  • RICE
  • FLOUR
  • SUGAR
  • MILK
  • CREAM
  • BUTTER
  • CHEESE BLOCK
  • EGGS
  • SAUSAGES
  • MINCE
  • BACON
  • HAM
  • SLICED BREAD
  • BREAD ROLLS
  • ICE CREAM
  • COCOA POWDER

Including IGA and Foodworks to Colesworth and Aldi, I'd say chase the weekly offers.

    Don't focus on one outlet.

Typically, essentials aren't on special nearly as much as junk food..

    • would call true ozbargainer go to foodworks/IGA? I'm yet to see a special that wasn't mirrored by the others. Costs for anything but specials is significantly more expensive

I shop wherever the prices for the exact item I want is cheapest
Our foodworks is 100m from Woolworths so visit both.

Most brand name specials are better at the bigger stores but I know for us there's the odd item
Devondale 500g on sale every 2-3 months at foodworks $3 Coles/Woolworths sale is never under $4

75% of fresh produce at our foodworks is cheaper then Woolworths but this might vary store to store
Ie 1kg small regular tomatoes $2-3 year round. Woolworths will have mangos 2 for $5, foodworks will be 3 for $5
5kg chicken breast always $35 /$7/kg every 4-6 weeks all sizes of chicken breast is on sale $6-$7/kg

Iga may last year 4l liquid coldpower $12 bought 12 months supply best price I've seen (ontop our iga's loyalty card is instant 3% off)

        • Niot that I am stalking you but where is this foodworks? I need to check it out

        • @Islund:
          Foodworks Tahmoor

          Very south/west of Sydney 😀
20 minute drive south of Campbelltown

Only 5 minutes from us ;)

        • @Bad Wolf: haha! Thanks - know exactlly tahmoor is. Used it drive through there on my way to Bowral - back in the day.

The fuel bill these days would far outweigh the savings.

Will pop in the next time I am passing by.

Aldi will be cheaper, but really that depends on which item, and by how much.

If you get woolies/coles Gift cards and flybuys/wooliesrewards, then maybe not.

Aldi Butter is $2.99 for 500G at Coles its $3. So with 4% off on Coles gift card thes makes it net $2.88 plus 2.8 flybuys points (or there abouts)

Also Coles/woolies have cheese blocks for $6 Aldi has then for $5.99 again cheaper at the big two with the discount gift cards

I know you say the cheapest, but lets take Bacon, is that shortcut? Or other . Budget bacon which has rind and fattier?

Sliced bread? Again daily delivered or baked in store? I prefer to pay a little morefor wholemeal baked in store (Woolies/Coles $1.90) vs Aldi's $1.49 delivered from outside.

And I am an on the whole an Aldi fan

  • Tbh you'll find ALDI marginally cheaper for everything. HOWEVER if you have to travel further to get to ALDI, You'll generally negate any savings. Most home brand pricing between the stores is similar, just ALDI has more consistent stock as there is less variety

Further to this. I live within walking distance to coles, but i need to take a $4 bus to ALDI (assuming I can shop within the transfer time, otherwise it's $8).

On a $50 shop, i need an 8% saving to justify that cost, and tbh I don't think I'd get that.

ALDI food is almost never reduced to clear, so if your local coles has heavy meat discounts, it may further worsen any savings.

It's the same argument to driving across town to save 5c/l on fuel. On a 40l tank, thats only $2 saved. At government 66c/km thats 3km before you negate the saving

aldi will be the cheapest, but generally I wait until wednesdays for the weekly half price offerings from coles/woolies and plan my weekly buy from there

  • unless you specifically research the specials in the catalogues from Woolies/Coles then otherwise it will be Aldi.

  • If you want a one stop shop that will overall be cheaper pick Aldi

Quantity your buying 1kg or 5/10/20kg at a time sales at Woolworths/Coles /ethnic stores might be cheaper.

    Thinking outside the box

You can also check if your area has a whole foods/distributor that sells direct to the public, bulk bags can be slightly cheaper and they have 5doz egg trays

Check your local butcher, enquire with the staff after sausages/meat that you just want cheap/bulk on the butchers time frame for freezing etc random cuts etc depending on the store they can do better then what's actually in the display cabinet.

I always wonder whether Ozbargin can enter into a group buying agreement on long lasting goods such as

    • Shampoo,
    • Rice
    • Toilet tissue

But I recommend "price hipster" website , for price drop

Buy eggs from a local egg farm shop. Our nearest one here in Perth ( 5 mins. drive) sells 30 mis shaped for $5.50, 30 asst. size for $6.00 & 30 jumbo for $7.00. Needless to say we don't buy them anywhere else.
For fruit & veg we go to Spudshed if not available from our own veggie garden & fruit trees - Spudshed is a Perth farmer outlet though.Their multi grain bread is 99c & is as good as any others we have tried.
For most other grocery needs Aldi is by far cheaper than the other majors.

    • Needless to say we don't buy them anywhere else.

Why? That price isn't anywhere near cheep.

      • Coles eggs are $3 per doz. goosegog gets 30 for $5.50. I would say that's a great price, where you getting your eggs?

Coles and Woolworths have 5 or 10 kg bags of rice for half price several times per year. That makes it cheaper than Asian groceries. Woolworths, at least in Melbourne, reduce the artisan breads by half price usually from about 6 pm.
The sourdough and fruit loaves are very good. Woolworths reduces meat by 50% quite often and while I would not buy chicken close to use by date I find other meat is still good. Items that are not reduced are generally cheaper in ALDI but I find that their meat is not as fresh as Coles and Woolworths. ALDI has a lot of interesting continental goods at reasonable prices.

  • Just bought some more eggs from our local farm shop. This time they have a special on $4.30 for 30 eggs ( for you that means 2.5 DOZEN ).
So to reiterate my previous statement - NEEDLESS TO SAY WE DON'T BUY THEM ANYWHERE ELSE !

  • This reply was directed to Diji1 who didn't seem able to understand the costings in my first post.
