Shofer Experience and its Referral System (Read if You Value Your Privacy)

Shofer was the first time I used a ride hailing service that is not a taxi. I'm not a fan of uber because of the surge pricing.

I'm impressed with the Shofer service. Car was a Camry which is what all Shofer drivers use. Pricing is cheaper than a taxi based on my trip, even without the referral code. The app will tell you an estimate but I ended up paying $4 less than the estimate, before the referral code was applied.

You need a credit card to use the app and depending on time of day and where you live, I would say put some time allowance when using Shofer as there is far less cars than uber. I live close to the city but it took 10 minutes for the driver to pick me up. Shofer has a fleet of 90 cars, the driver told me. The driver kindly offered me a bottled water but I refused as I was not thirsty that time.

After the trip, there's an option to tip the driver. If you used a referral code, it won't hurt to tip the driver, especially for a great service.

I recommend Shofer based on this experience. I really like that there is no surge pricing.

Ah, back to the referral code, so I used one in the wiki and after code was used - THE NAME OF THE REFERRER appeared.

It couldn't be a big deal to most, as big brother is watching us all the time anyway. But be mindful if you're the kind of person who prefers to stay anonymous, that Shofer referral system will spill out your name to whoever uses your referral code.

Who is the OzBargainer, you ask? Nah. But if you think it was you and curious to find out, you can PM me and I will reply with your name. I will only respond if it is you. LOL.

Going back to Shofer, I encourage everyone to use the service. uber could use a good competition.

  • This is Perth only apparently?

  • Was it first/last name showed?

Ubers 'referral' codes show the first name, first letter of last name as well, and if its a driver, you can get their picture too if you look in the right place!

Anyhow, don't want your name spread around? Don't give out you code!

    • First AND Last name

      • Yeah entire LAST name is a issue…. Drop them a note and say its not good. They can easily fix this issue.

  • Interesting, I'll leave a note about that in the referral Wiki page. Thanks.

May I just ask about your aversion to Uber's surge pricing? I've used uber a handful of times overseas and it's always displayed the price I was going to be charged BEFORE I hail the vehicle (sometimes surge pricing would apply that's why the fares could be different)… If I don't agree to the price it was going to charge, I don't have to go through with it.
    I think that's pretty fair.

    • With Shofer there's no guess work. The only time Shofer price will increase is if you encounter traffic or re-routing but you know it won't be 20-30 or 50% more due to surge pricing. You forget that uber was blasted due to its surge pricing during the Sydney incident.

How are you guessing with Uber? If it is as stated above (price is displayed before placing order), then there is nothing to guess. You either accept the price or you don't.

        • Shofer doesn't do surges. Uber while it shows you the 'price' it could be surging and you're paying 2.5x the normal price due to high demand.

        • @Level380: I realise that (although haven't actually used it). I was just querying why the OP labelled it as "guess work" when it appears it shown completely to you before you accept.

        • @djkelly69: Uber pax app never use to give you an upfront estimate with the surge factored in. If you accepted 2x surge, you had to do the math in your head or wait for the bill!

        • @Level380: Ahh ok, that makes more sense then.

        • @djkelly69: Yeah…. lots of unhappy people….. Who didn't know 3.5x a $30 trip is $105 until after the trip!

Uber recently fixed that up. So paxs seem much happier now.

        • @Level380:
Ahhh, I didn't know that they DIDN'T used to display to total surge price. I've just seen the total to be paid in all my limited experience. And yes, I could tell there were differences in pricing because I was taking the same trips.

I don't think surge pricing is a valid reason to avoid uber. It's only been offered to me once and I waited ten minutes and it's gone. There have been plenty of times in my life where I would be happy to lay surge pricing in order to get moving in a safe vehicle as opposed to where I was waiting for a cab.

Uber surge is very nearly a perfect example of supply and demand. If you want the service bad enough, you will pay the surge, otherwise you will wait, possibly for hours, or in a remote area, forever, for a taxi. I don't want to pay it but I would if I wanted to get moving. Last year I ended up getting an uber black to get home from sky works. No way would i have gotten a cab even though we walked about 1.5 km away. The uber black was less than a cab. And it was clean, non smelly and had a personable driver.

  • Ouch :/

I guess it's because the referral program is intended for friends, not internet strangers.

  • Just moved Shofer referrals from Wiki to user-submitted referral which you can now access here. When you click on the link a random code will be shown from ones submitted by users, and you don't get to see whose code it is.
