Anyone in Australia doing 3D glass printing yet?

I need a glass prototype made up and was wondering if anyone knows of a 3D glass printer in Australia. Last I heard MIT had one, so maybe there is a uni here that is using one too? Or private owner? The collective knowledge and reach of OzB is huge, so I figured this would be the best place to ask. Failing that, I would happily take recommendations on local glassblowers (Sydney & surrounds) that do commissions for reasonable rates. Thanks for reading.

  • From what it looks like, nobody does this commercially yet - it's just research so unlikely you will get this done unless you pony up a few hundred k for your prototype…

…like Lynx did when they paid the price of a supercar to paint a can of LYNX deodorant the darkest black ever created… All the photos/videos look like someone has simply photoshopped a black shape into the images/video.

    • Thanks, you turned up the same results as I did. i am hoping for a uni student or friend of a friend to see this and go - yeah we got that technology.

  • Is perpex/acrylic an option?

    • It would give a more defined shape than glass, I have a full 3D model, I know what it looks like perfect, but glass has a certain slump to it.

  • i think the mit one was still very much experimental
does it have to be glass? there are some translucent plastics and resins that you could use with FDM or SLA printing

    • I am beginning to think getting a mould cast is the easier, cheaper (if not prefered) option. It needs to be glass, I have a Blender Render to see what it's shape is, I want structural integrity (not in theory) and form once in glass, specifically 3D printed, because I want to know if it is a viable production technique for the future. If wishes were horses, this beggar would ride ;)

      • i would think the plastics would be as strong if not stronger than glass, glass is a bit fragile normally
plastic parts could be melted if you need to change the shape to be more glass like

        • It is the major feature of the design, it could be done in stainless steel, but not plastic - of course it would not be as sexy in steel.

  • +1

A bit late - but you can probably machine the glass?

I've used these guys before: http://www.bo-glass.com/pages/Tempered.html - very well priced, delivered via DHL and paid with Paypal.

    • Not too late, I am still looking at options, thanks.
