Apple TV - Need Help in Choosing

Hi all

First time poster into the forum.

Looking at buying an Apple TV and weighing up whether to go with the 3rd or 4th generation. Considerable price difference between the two.

Mainly want to watch downloaded iTunes shows or Netflix.

I would consider non apple but want to access iTunes movies/TVs already purchased.

Appreciate your opinions

Cheers

I'd go with the 4th Gen. There are a number of things that I love compared to the 3rd gen:

    • Its great to be able to use Siri to search across itunes/netflix/stan etc.
    • You can also install apps and 7,10,9,ABC,SBS all have catchup/live apps
    • The ATV controls your TV through HDMI (Including power off) so you only need one remote/device
    • Some of the games available are really fun and 2 player too (Crossy Roads, etc)

Ive got the 4th gen one at home - i havent used any of the previous ones before though. The UI with the touch pad remote works really well and also you can use it as a mini game console if thats your thing. It also has a bit more power than the third gen. IMO the remote is really really good and UI is so simple, i cant imagine it without the touchpad. Im not sure what the previous gens had but if it was a more generic remote system then i think i would pay the extra just for the updated UI

Go for the latest one it supprts app, better hardware and software, and so on. Unless you want to spend the bare minimum and doest care about app support.

Get the latest one, get refurbished, it's cheaper.

  • Why do you need an Apple TV? I just watch things through my laptop and connect the HDMI output t my TVs.

  • My child is using it - too complicated for them to use that way
