Signify 50" TV Has No Sound in HD

Signify 50" TV has no sound in HD channels. (Channels that use Dolby Digital.. 7HD, 9HD etc)

They keep selling this TV on Ebay without mentioning that it's faulty.
Even Signify website assures you that their TVs are guaranteed to be free of faults.

Signify support can't fix this TV. They say all Signify 50" TVs got this fault. They offer you a refund or a $100 cashback.

Other than that, TV is fine.

Beware.

  • Can you digital audio out to a receiver to do the decoding?

    • Not sure, I have no way of testing it. I also think support might've mentioned this workaround.

      • Does it have a Digital Audio output?
ie Optical or coaxial… possibly HDMI ARC?

Obviously wont solve your problems, but could make for some future bargains as they will surely be getting a huge majority of them being refunded and returned.

    • I actually have speakers with coaxial in. I'll give it a go.

    • Same thing via coaxial. SD channels work, HD channels don't.

      • Wow, that makes no sense… I was thinking that some accountant had pulled the decoder chip to save $2 per unit.
But the encoded audio stream should pass through the digital output OK.

Do your speakers have Dolby decoding?

Are there any settings that need to be changed in the TV to change the pass through of audio to the Digital out?

        • S/PDIF settings on the TV allow you to choose: OFF, PCM and Auto.
PCM and Auto only supply sound for non dolby channels.

I don't think speakers have Dolby decoding. BEHRINGER MS20

        • @Fleshk:

Yeah, I still think that's what the problem is..
Auto should just pass it straight through for decoding by the external device.

        • @scubacoles:
Are there speakers with Dolby decoding?
Maybe I need Dolby receiver? But it's expensive.

        • @Fleshk:
You ought to be able to find a non-HDMI dobly decoding receiver secondhand pretty cheap.
I've bought them in the past for around $200 including a set of surround speakers.

You can even pick up low end HDMI units new for around $300 these days.

  • does the tv output sound via the 3.5mm or stereo rca out?

    • Doesn't work via 3.5mm headphone jack.
