    1. Telstra pre-paid starter packs. A $30 starter pack regularly goes on sale for $10. You can use the $30 credit to purchase things in the play store.
    2. I've seen google play gift cards on sale at Woolworths/Coles for 20% off
    3. Gumtree
    • telstra no longer does that

      I don't think you can anymore, with Telstra. Only old Telstra Freedom Plus plans.

        Depends what exactly you're trying to do.

        The old plans gave you call + txt + $30 credit (which could be used on the play store) - these no longer exist. The current plans don't allow you to use the credit at the play store.

        If you activate a prepaid sim on the 'long expiry' plan, you get $30 credit, which you can still use the play store. I did it a few weeks ago (early Jan 17), without a problem.

        • Oh I see. Thanks for clarifying!

        • thanks for the tip i have a $30 telstra sim expireing soon so i just activated it.
          1min later telstra drained the entire $30 which according to the usage history was used for 15360Kbyes worth of data (though no web pages loaded)
          in live chat now to fix this lol.

        • the sims here? I guess they aren't useful anyway unless they're on sale like the pre-paid starter packs were.

          unless they're on sale like the pre-paid starter packs were

          I still see pre-paid starter packs in lots of stores … no reason why they wont go on sale again, as they reach their expiry date.

          Have you heard that they're getting rid of them?

        • @sp00ker: Oh wait, are you saying the pre-paid starter packs still work with google credit?

        • +3

          @BlazinPast:

          Yes!!!

          @sp00ker: Even better, if you activate a $30 starter pack on the new Prepaid Plus option then you get 28 days call/text/data then on the 28th day change the plan to longlife or simplicity and spend the $30 credit in the play store. Best of both worlds!

        • Can you confirm that you have tried by yourself? 100% works for changing plan and keeping the credit?
          I don't want risk my start pack for activating Plus plan at the first place.

          @andylch:

          Yep 100% confirmed did it myself in Dec16. Check the Whirlpool threads about it - they tend to have more up to date info about Telstra starter packs. Was confirmed there by many users.

          @andylch: tomclancy is correct. I've done this recently too.

        • Is this the one you're referring to? https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/off…

          As I understand, I'll have to find a $10 for $30 credit sim recharge pack, then recharge it under the long-life plan as linked above.

          Then pay in the Google Play by changing the payment method?

          @jikijiki:

          No this one: https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/30-…

          They sell them at lots of stores - KMart, JB Hifi, Harvery Norman, Officeworks

          Typically they have an expiry date and store put them on sale close to the expiry date for $10.

    • What's with the neg vote? haters gonna hate

      Is there going to be any issues with activating a lot of them. Let's say you activate one per month, would this flag something in the Telstra system? Asking because that's really cheap for google play credits but I currently have a post paid plan with Telstra and don't want to "ruin" the account.

        No idea what you mean by a lot of them. 1 per month doesn't sound like a lot to me.

        I activated 6 within a few minutes of each other in January 2017. Paid for 2 months of play music (gift subscription) and transferred the remaining ~$6 credit to another sim card via credit me2u.

        I didn't get any calls/txt/emails from telstra about my usage pattern.

        If you have an old plan, you might be able to use some of your calling credit to pay for google play. I haven't read much about it, but the comment above about old prepaid plans got me thinking…

        • Cool, just checking. Cheers!

    Google opinion rewards will slowly give you google play credit. Each survey pays ~ $0.10-0.40, I usually get one every couple of days.

  • The new Datapass II plan doesn't give you any credit :(
