  • How is the game?

Also will I need a PS subscription to play online?

    • +13

      The game is excellent.
Glad to see you clicked on the link to read the specifics and have your PS+ question answered already.

      • A simple yes would have sufficed :p thanks! :)

        • +7

Yeah I know, but so would a simple read of the info already provided.
Get this, enjoy it, it's great.

Edit: that was not me that down voted you. But I understand their sentiment.

        • Smh.

        • +1

          @snuke:

It was a joke haha but all good!

        • +2

          @Heracles26:

It was obviously a joke but unfortunately many go way, way over many members' heads. C'est la vie.

        • +2

          @Heracles26:

Yeah, I sense a bit of seriousness in your comment.

    • +10

I can't comment from a console perspective, however this is the best multiplayer I've personally played in years on the PC. I haven't touched Battlefield 1 since picking this up in December and I'm not sure I can ever go back to the likes of Counter-Strike etc. again considering how dynamic the game is. I would describe it as the offspring between Counter-Strike and Payday 2, with the gadgets of Battlefield.

Multiplayer is a 5v5 affair with everyone picking a unique attacker/defender (operator) - Think MOBA-lite in FPS form as far as gadgets/weapons/skills go, however it's still very much a skill-based FPS. The defender map spawns vary between rounds and the general goal is for the attacker to infiltrate the defended position to defuse, rescue or capture based on the objective. For those wondering, the game is tactical shooter and NOTHING like COD - think more along of the lines of a slower, methodical and realistic Counter-Strike, where thinking/flanking/cover play a far more important role.

What really makes the rounds great is how you go about attacking or defending with your chosen operators. Some are able to breach fortified walls, others able to defend against it, some operators counter others and generally win-or-lose you have a great time. Vision and cover play a huge role in the game, as well as line-of-sight. The game has heaps of earnable DLC (headgear, weapon skins, costumes, etc) that can be earned with the in game currency you accumulate after every match and nothing "PAY2WIN" like. I would easily recommend this to anyone who has felt the FPS genre has grown stale over the years.

For a couple negatives, there is the odd matchmaking issue when joining a new game - nothing you can't put up with, and there is the occasional spoilt-brat-raging TKer, however those are minor issues for what I consider is a magnificent game which flew under my radar for a year and I can't wait for the new operators and maps coming out this year.

      • I play on console (PS4) and it's also one of my favourite games! You get no aim assist so you can't be as accurate as PC players, but you won't get any hackers or scripters (although battleye is doing a good job of banning them).

        • 45 second prep phase then 4 minute rounds.

      • Awesome thanks for the detailed reply! How long do rounds last on average?

        • Rounds are pretty quick - approximately 3.5-4 minutes. There is the prep phase where attackers need to find the objective and defenders will reinforce their position and try to stop it being discovered too early before the main action begins. Often rounds will go down to the last minute, however it never feels too long waiting to spawn for the next round.

        • @Melo:

wow yea that is not too long at all! Cheers I will try it out!

      • Nice write up..

      • Will it fix my counter-strike addiction?

        • +1

          what fixed mine was netflix!
but not sure how to fix new one..

  • +1

Should include download sizes in the OP.

    • If you can find the specific download size (posts online are conflicting) I'll happily add them ;)

      • +1

The links in the article you link provide that info (ish)
PS4 says 15.6Gb, however I show a 35.41GB install file size, which would be right as the 4 DLCs would add a lot.
        XBox store says 33.76 GB
I would expect PC to be similar to the 33-35GB of the consoles.

        • +2

Install size is 65.7gb with the HD Texture Pack on PC.

        • @Dagmar: this is over half of my monthly limit!

  • -4

    Free play isn't a whole game…

  • +6

The game is amazing you guys, everyone should give it a go honestly. Big free content drop soon too!

    • -7

      Even with the tremendous downgrades?

      • +2

That's Ubisoft. But frankly, if the game played like they portrayed, and I mean game play, not visuals, then it would suck.

        • +2

The visuals in the trailer would interfere with the gameplay as it stands.

Agreed there was a downgrade, but the gameplay needed crisp visual not blurry filters.

      • +1

Yes, and somehow people were able to enjoy the game immensely for over a year before crowbcat reminded everyone of said downgrades. I don't really see what your point is. It's a tactical, competitive multiplayer shooter. It doesn't need to impress with technically groundbreaking graphics, as neither Halo/Counter Strike/Overwatch do. Get over yourself.

        • -1

          Get over yourself

lol bit of a strong response, did my response personally affect you in some way???

        • +2

          @BTRaynes:

Your generic, old-hat shitposting annoys me, yes. Be a more inquisitive person, dig deeper and you'll find it's a fantastic game with graphics at the very bottom of it's priorities.

    • +3

I thoroughly enjoyed it and even stopped my WOW subscription so I could focus on it a bit more. Reviews in general seem to give it a solid 4/5 and the IGN Review seems to be a very balanced review of what you should expect. Add the upcoming new characters for season two and it will make the game even better.

Was there anything in particular that made you think it bombed?

      • I think he means 'game is anything but casual, with steep learning curve and a skill ceiling still not reached in pro matches' therefore not appealing to much of the gaming community.

Game did well, in fact, another year of free dlc says you're wrong bargainist.

    • Not sure what you're talking about. The game had a peak of 34,000 players in January and that's only counting Steam players. All physical copies unlocked on uPlay. And then you count the copies bought on uPlay. You're talking absolute bollocks.

  • Great game to try out. Play with four other mates in co-op etc. I'm personally not a fan of PVP so I usually play 3-5 man Terrorist Hunt with my mates or solo (Lone Wolf).

    • -1

Doesn't take long for kids to kill the enjoyment of PvP in games like this.

      • +3

PvP is where the fun is at.

It's a brutal learning curve, but you will learn from every game you play.

I'm 500 hours in and still getting the hang of certain maps and mechanics.

    • Hey mate, is the single player campaign also playable in 5 player coop? So plenty of hours of fun with friends? I also like to play coop with my mates and was wondering if this would be a good game for us to try out.

  • Great game folks, fast paced and intense action. Known for its maps like counter strike so many hiding places.

  • I hope season 2 passes will be onsale soon

    • On sale ages ago. I got mine last month.

    • +1

But remember to u u don't need the season pass. All maps are free and all characters available with in game currency.

  • PSA this game really raises my blood pressure and I'm not exactly an old man. Horror games don't do squat, but when you're the last guy alive on your team and cowering behind thin cover trying desperately to out-think and anticipate the 3 enemies left combing the map for you.. no other game like it. I will say though that it can be punishingly hard and frustrating until you get the knack of the operators and maps

  • 4 day weekend? Good on ya Ubisoft

  • +1

My ADSL is so shite that if I start downloading on the 2nd, I'll be lucky to fire it up before the 5th!

    Bloody NutFlix!!!

    • +1
    • same problem here… do you know if we can download in advance before the 2nd?

      • I don't know, I've kind of given up on these kind of trials for that reason.

I much prefer the time/chapter limited models like Doom & Unraveled that you can use at your leisure.

Great for the 23 people across the nation with NBN though I suppose… ;)

  • +4

Warning: free weekend is generally a time when more experienced players troll noobs. But don't be deterred, there are lots of decent folk that will actually teach you to play and will be happy to add you to friends for the free weekend.

Just have a bloody mic and some headphones or you're not going to have a good time.

    • Yep, as usual, the posts on the communities such as Reddit are asking long standing players to be nice, to encourage and not annihilate the noobs in a nasty fashion, team mates included.

      • I second that vote.

Some peeps just don't realise that you kill the community by being toxic to new players.

Sure, be a dick, have a laugh, but encourage rather than discourage or the game dies and we all have to go back to real life.

    • As a newbie you will likely be reinforcing the wrong walls, accidentally shoot your teammates/destroy their gadgets and will very likely pick Fuze on hostage maps until … it happens :)

Joking aside, there is a learning curve, however it's well worth it in the end. Just don't go in expecting to run-and-gun like you do in games such as COD/Battlefield. Map knowledge, cover and operator differences play a huge role in this game and knowing when-and-how to proceed is something that will take some time.

Finally SOUND is so important in this game. Every, shuffle, clang and ding you make reveals to the enemy that you are around and it's probably the most important thing to be aware of when you first start.

    • Agreed this game especially is useless without headset, it's all about teamwork. This is not call of duty

  • +3

I wish we could preload these games for the free weekend. Half the time of the free weekend is spent downloading the damn game!

    • Gotta get that NBN ;)

    • Agreed, I know the feel! I'm still downloading the For Honour beta which I'm pretty sure is almost over haha

      • It's been over for a day and a half sadly. My beta key ended up in my spam folder, and by the time i downoaded and installed i only managed to get about 2 ro 3 hours out of it :P

    • Errrr…. you can. I am downloading it now for PC. I assume PS and Xbox are the same. Instructions are in the link.

      • they aren't the same

  • This game seems pretty cheap now, at least $29 at JbHiFi or part of the two for $40 deal. What's peoples thoughts on the multiplayer longevity on Xbox for this title? Seen a number of videos lately and I am keen to play if I can tear myself away from Titanfall 2 long enough. Hoping it might scratch my counter-strike itch.

    • I'd definitely jump on it, on PS4 in particular I can still constantly find matches easily. Its getting a full second year of free content which is keeping the community strong and alive. Have fun!

    • Got it for $20 from ebgames few months ago on a special. Due to low price and cult following the player base is growing again. Unfortunately initially the game did poorly sales wise even though it got good reviews

    • Awesome, well I just picked it up as part of the JB HiFi 2 for $40 deal which I split with a mate so $20. See you online!

  • I wonder if the new clean-up crew mode is included in the free weekend…

  • This and Titanfall 2 are games I really want to play but have no time. Working and playing overwatch and bf1 and cs. No time at all.

    • +1

As someone who has put an insane amount of time into Bad Co 2, BF3 and BF4, BF1 fails to get my time over Rainbow 6. BF1 is a millions time prettier, larger etc… but simply fails to be anywhere near as engaging as R6S, or earlier Battlefields for that matter. And I am pretty average at R6S, and always top 3-5 on BF, I do enjoy the challenge.

1300 hours? Mate, you need to get out more…

      • I study law full-time at the local university, work night shifts, have a fiancee and play this game. I think I get out enough IMO.

        • Lol. Fair enough.. Not sure how you manage to do that considering the games been out for just over a year.. So you play on average 3+ hours a day??? Find that hard to believe..

        • +1

@Maz78: Obviously some people are better at time management. I find time to game and post deals even though I work full time, second contracted job, doing a qualification and having a personal life.

  • +2

Alot of talk is about multiplayer has this got good single player or is it only really worth it for the multiplayer.

    • +3

Single player is limited here, its fine to learn the game, but the AI is uninteresting. Nothing beats outsmarting a human opponent.

      • Agree yet I can't help but play Lone Wolf while waiting for my mates to jump online. One day I will be good enough for Realistic. :-)

  • Tango Down!

Definitely going to give this a try.
I miss playing rainbow six on mplayer.
    Those were the days

Does this have team death match alongside the terrorist hunt mode?

    • +1

The game is primarily a PVP experience with three game modes in rotation. Thats where the meat of the experience is, but I've played over a thousand T Hunts (of which there are about 4 game modes) and it's still a blast.

    • Does this have team death match

There are 3 objective gamemodes; Secure (1 point), Bomb (2 points) and Hostage. The round ends when either you've secured the objective/defused the bombs or all your team is dead. That's as much TDM as it gets.

      • Hmm ok.
        Makes sense.
        Gives the game urgency.
But it sorta sux because every round everyone will be just be meeting up at a location.

You can choose your outfit still yeah?so I can blend into the snow?
Fake heartbeat sensor still a thing?

  • Finally a chance to have some friends try this game.

Oh, never noticed the HD texture pack..

  • Link on the Ubisoft blog page for PS4 not working for anyone else?

    http://blog.ubi.com/rainbow-six-siege-play-free-weekend/

    • Not working no idea how to download this trial on ps4.

      • Think I had a similar issue with the Titanfall 2 free weekend from memory. Figuring out how to download the thing was such a mission.

You'd think they'd make the process as seamless as possible, but I guess not :(

  • Downloaded the demo but all options seem blocked "currently not available. Please check back later"

    • What platform?

    • You have downloaded 6 gig u need to download 33 gig before you can play only thing u can do now is watch the videos
