Second Hand Diamonds and/or Engagement Rings

So a bit on a twist of the usual 'find me an engagement ring', my fiancée likes the idea of getting a second hand diamond for a few reasons so I'm hoping people can point me in the direction of likely places check out. If we got a 2nd hand ring we'd more than likely just pull the main diamond out and get a new band made.

Anyway, so far I've checked:
- graysonline
- ebay
- firstestate auctions

Any other suggestions? I saw CashConverters on a different thread but can't help but think that was a joke!

Appreciate any input!

  • Got this information from one of those family gathering gossip and chatter

So dont know how reliable is this info

I was told that to best way to score a bargain or value purchase, is to buy a raw diamond (dont know how), and then get the jeweler to shape to your liking. Get your wife to be part of the shaping process.

    Good luck

I stand to be corrected, but I always thought the Jeweller made the ring and the diamond cuter made the diamond. I thought Diamond cutting is a trade in itself. Diamonds are graded - to save money I would try get a slightly inferior diamond. Brilliant cut diamonds hide imperfections better than square diamonds.

    • This is what I did.
I purchased the diamond from bluenile (pre-cut) and had a local jeweller make the ring. I think all together the ring value was around 1.6-2 times the original cost from memory.

      • cheers, this is the current back up plan

        • Please report back your progress when possible…. Diamond ring is an expensive asset, but once bought ….. There little ROI.

    What's your Budget?

Cash Converters do have 2nd Hand Jewellery.

Have you considered Moissanite instead of Diamond?

    • Further to the above, Cash Converters have lots of 2nd hand jewellery, it depends what you want. I'm guessing you're looking for a single large diamond? Take a browse through the webshop before you dismiss it: https://webshop.cashconverters.com.au/items/135/rings/?searc…

      • thanks, and appreciate the link

    • 5-7k ballpark. Have considered them, and lab diamonds. Fiancee is being cool about the 2nd hand part, she's not so keen on not-a-diamond.
Lab diamonds would have been fine (preferable even!) but they really aren't much cheaper than regular diamond (comparing with bluenile etc)

      • Would you consider Moissanite? They are pretty affordable even brand new.

        • yeah they are, but don't tick the 'bought a diamond' box unfortunately! (not my decisions hah)

What ever you do, just make sure you are getting a real diamond.

    • Why?

cos that's what the OP wants……

Even if you choose a diamond from the most expensive jeweller in the world or are ripped off by buying a Cartier engagement ring, there may be a chance that your diamond is secondhand.

I'm sure girls don't want to hear that their new perfect diamond may be used, but diamond prices are based on the 4 C's and not whether it's been used before. Of course they are cleaned/graded/certified before they go back onto the market.
