Uniden BW3451R 4.3” Digital Wireless Baby Video Monitor - $244.30 + Postage @ JB Hi-Fi

31

Long time lurker, first time poster lol ……

Have been looking for a baby monitor as we are expecting soon, found good reviews for the Uniden BW3451R, usually retails for around $330-$350.

Review: http://www.goaskmum.com.au/reviews/uniden-bw3451r-baby-video…

JB has it on sale for $244.30, which I believe is a cracking price.

It looks like they don't carry this in stores so you will need to order it online and pay postage for it.

These are fine if it's what you're after but with a few simple steps you can easily use an inexpensive Pan, Tilt (Digital) Zoom IP camera and view the footage on your smart phones/tablets… even simultaneously if required. No need for yet another device! One more step allows you to even view the footage remotely ie. while you're at work or holiday or whatever. They even include two-way audio! Dedicated units such as this will always have a market sure but I never understood why they were so expensive. Maybe these can do something an IP camera cant?! I'm fine to be proven wrong. I don't know 'everything' ;)

      You're wrong…but I have no proof lol

Your wrong about needing pan, tilt zoom - its a baby monitor :-)

We've been using the Xiaomi Ants Cams for about 18mths (ended up getting another as the kids loved them).

For under $40 its got excellent night vision. Motion alerts, Remote viewing (android/IOS apps), Local sd card for storage (or with a hacked rom you can connect/record with TinyCam, Synology surveillance station, etc ). Two-audio. Most importantly it has a high W.A.F. (Wife Acceptance Factor).

      • Your wrong about not needing pan, tilt and zoom (especially the pan and tilt). We've got an Oricom, and have 2 kids sleeping in the same room, one in a cot and the other on a bed that are close to each other. Having the pan and tilt actually helps us to focus on the smaller child in the cot, and pan/tilt to check on the other child as required. Our's does not have zoom though (at least as far as I know…I haven't experimented with it that much).

OP: Not sure if this one is value for money, but does seem to be a good piece of kit. If you can find a youtube video demonstrating its night vision, and its good (expect it to be grainy), then you should be all set.

        • Yes I was looking at the IP cameras, but I am sure that the Mrs would have struggled with it knowing her lol and I would have ended up buying one of the normal baby monitors.

For those that are not technologically chalanged an IP camera option is great, but for the rest the plug and play option that these provide will save you from going insane with all the questions about how this works or how that works.

        • Yeah, the zoom on IP cams is usually just digital so the higher the resolution the better the 'zoom'. I'm using 4MP static domes around the house (and no, it's not a meth lab) and the digital zoom 4MP allows before the image gets too pixelated is pretty impressive! Not bad for $150 'cheapies'. Just run-of-the-mill Hikvisions.

    • I have one of these and they are great. IP cameras are good and i tossed that option up for a while but having a dedicated screen put my wifes mind at ease especially at night time. Having an IP meant we had to open an app on the phone to check in as oppose to just looking at a screen. This camera also allows you to remote view.

  • The plus for this model is that if you plug a lan cable to the dock, you can watch the feed remotely.
However when viewing remotely there is no audio.
Plus your internet uplink better be good for it to work

Having said that, I guess most ip cams have similar remote access function for a lower price

    • There is audio. Press the headphones looking button

  • Aren't these just RF wireless? Which means they're susceptible to hacking? I have one from another that allows portable use (battery powered) and used it for mobile locations but only for short periods and never for an entire room.

I second the pan/tilt IP cameras but only those that I'm confident have updated firmware and don't expose outside of my wireless network (without vpn). Not sure about those xiaomi ants cams - no pan/tilt and no night vision?

    • Almost everything is susceptible to hacking, the question would be about the likelihood of it happening, and the worst case scenario if it does happen.

  • We used the Swann SWADS-446 720p PTZ.

Purchased from JB when they were $99.

  • I just bought the cheaper version with 2x cameras, got it today.

is a great price too, in my opinion.

  • I have a different model but the monitor unit seems to be the same/very similar.

FWIW the battery life is poor. My unit is less than a year old and I get only an hour or so from a full charge. My biggest complaint however would be the LCD viewing angle, as you need to be near perpendicular to make out the image properly. I'm used many budget LCD monitors and I'm used to bad viewing angles, but this is an extreme case.

  • I have this same unit and have been really happy with it. We leave the base unit and screen mounted right near the tv and plugged into the router. In the kitchen we have an iPad generation 1 that we use with the app to monitor. In all other rooms we use our phones.

It allows multiple connections simultaneously both remote and local, you can login to the admin portal via the IP address in a browser using admin/admin to change settings, turn off internet access etc and the app allows you to swipe to pan and tilt the camera plus Audio works locally and remotely.
The best thing I like about it is the temperature on the base unit.

The uniden app is ok, seems to be just a rebranded version of a generic viewer app. If you have an older device like my iPad 1 with iOS 5 it won't support the app however the below app also works with the camera and older iOS versions

    Its RUBBISH!
All baby monitors are. Went through buying and returning all the best rated baby monitors a couple of weeks ago.
Paying $200+ for ancient technology that has the worst reviews in terms of longevity and quality.

After pulling hair out at the fact most baby monitors dont even have a megapixel rating on the camera lens or product packaging and the fact that resolution could be counted on the one hand, I followed the number 1 recommended method from CHOICE, which was to use an APP. Baby Monitor 3G. Best $5.99 i spent.

    All you need:

Old fully functioning phone. I used a Samsung S5.
    Selfie stick.
    Conduit clamp (50c from bunnings!)
Wall, dresser or anything else to mount selfie stick.
Optional long USB cable to keep plugged in.

All for under $20 (excl cost of old phone)

App works perfectly. Can hear and see the baby and you can even turn the phones flashlight!!!!
I can log in from work and see my little princess sleeping even when I'm interstate.

Sorry for negging but i really need to bring the attention of people to this. Baby monitors are a rip. These companies ahould not be allowed to get away with selling $10 kits for over $200!!!! Especially when you consider how small and useless the pin size camera is.

Sorry for grammar. In a hotel room on my phone.

Not sure why your negging the deal if you have a problem with the baby monitor, it has nothing to do with the saving that you get from this sale, can one of the mods remove this neg please, just because you can DIY a baby monitor doesn't mean that everyone else would want to.

Looks like the sale has ended anyway, price is back to $349.

Its a neg because its not a deal.

People are being blatantly ripped off. Even though its a fabricated $100 saving.

        Poor camera and software quality.
Good luck. Wont last longer than 6months, thats if the battery (which CANNOT be replaced) lasts that long.

This wasn't a Neg towards you. Dont that it personally shrimpy
