Maximum Working Hours Per Week

Hi everyone,
I've got a question that I was discussing with my cousins, but couldn't find anything online about it.

So we found that the maximum working hours is 38 hours for a job.
However, is there anything stopping anyone from picking up another job and work extra hours? Say pushing it to 50-60 hours a week?

I personally don't think that it should be capped if the individual goes and gets another job elsewhere.

Let me know what you think, or if there's a link on this topic.

Thanks heaps.

lol 38 hours a week. Most professionals far exceed that (including me).

  • Many people work full time and then work a part time job at night and weekends. Nothing at all unusual about that.

My contract says 38 hours a week, but it's easily over 50.

…said iforgotmysocks, whilst on ozbargain at work

  • So we found that the maximum working hours is 38 hours for a job.

Pretty you misread and/or misunderstood the statement where you found it

  • My contract is 38 hours a week, but I rarely leave on time so do work more than that. 40 hours is a light week.

I also hold a casual position one day a week and as long as the performance in both my jobs is up to scratch no one cares.

I haven't been doing this for more than a few months, so I haven't sat down and done the maths yet on whether it is finalically worth it or now though

What is this, working hours for ants?

  • So we found that the maximum working hours is 38 hours for a job.

    You found wrong

Maximum is 168 hours. Not even the most dedicated workaholic is brave enough to flout this regulation.

My timesheet once said I did. Automated system put 12 months of hours into 1 month. I ignored it.

You can work as many hours as you like, at some point it will start impacting your [physical/social/mental/spiritual] health. Some people have to work more hours than is good to make ends meet, some people are lucky and don't have to.

I know the more hours I work, the lower quality the work I put out is. Working more than ~40 hours at my current job would be stupid, because I'd end up causing more problems than I fixed.

      this.

I was doing 52+ hours a week Mon - fri..eventually took its toll

  • hahaha 38… oh man…. how I wish :)

  • you are probably referring to the overtime calculations but that is different depending what industry/sector in you are in and your contract job

    https://www.fairwork.gov.au/employee-entitlements/hours-of-w…

Employees who work 38 hours Monday to Friday and work overtime on a Saturday, have to be paid for a minimum of 3 hours at overtime rates.

  • Ah thanks for clarifying that.
I knew it didn't sound right cause I do roughly 40 hours on an easy week.

  • you can work as many hours as you want a week unless:
    - ur contracts does not allow you to (some might say you cant work for a competitor)
    - ur working more than 168 hours, cause its just not possible in a week (lol)
    - tax! you'll prolly be paying a lot of tax that its not worth working any more
    - need a life! if you work so much u cant be on ozbargain buying bargains!

  • Be careful about working extra jobs as well; with some companies you have to get approval before you can work outside the company.
